Review

"This is a winner, combining an engaging narrative and appropriate documentation into one solid study of three iconic aviators and their times." --Library Journal, starred review"A gripping document of a brilliant era in our history and a few of the men who helped make it so." --Kirkus Reviews, starred review“As Mr. Groom's absorbing narrative unfolds, we see one man enduring a horrendous ordeal on the open sea; another nearly losing his life in a bombing run; and yet another finding a sort of redemption for his battered public image.” –The Wall Street Journal"Groom’s rich narrative tell the intertwined stories of these aeronautical pioneers as they took to the air to become exemplars of the spirit of the “greatest generation.” --Flight Journal"That the imagination that conceived Forrest Gump could conjure up fresh ways to tell stories of American history is astonishing...Groom's epic story is a tribute...Readers of all his fiction and nonfiction might well feel inclined to testify that he is fast becoming a national treasure. Forrest Gump would agree." --The Advocate“Winston Groom writes history like a novelist. Groom handles this complex subject in clear, understandable terms, woven into a great air war story.”  –American Aviation Historical Society"Groom is at his best sharing history through the personal stories of the people involved. This book was a Christmas gift. It's a brief biography of each of the 3 aviators in question, first their childhoods and how they came to fly, continuing on to their contributions to WWI and WWII (in the case of Doolittle and Rickenbacker) and Lindberg's trans-atlantic flight and subsequent problems with the press and ultimate work on aviation research in WWII. As another commenter noted, there do seem to be some historical errors, but overall the storytelling is good. The author switches between the 3 aviators, telling the various parts of their stories which occur during the same time frame, making it somewhat easier to follow. Overall, it's a good story.

I had high hopes for this book, but I ended up being a little disappointed and questioning of the author's credibility. While giving an overview of German conquests early in WWII, he includes the assertion that Finland and Sweden were conquered by Nazi armies. First, Finland was a German ally throughout the war, and second, Sweden was famously neutral throughout the war! It's such an egregious factual error that it made me question the credibility of the rest of the book. He later asserts that a "significant portion of the American Army...including the 101st Airborne Division" was surrounded by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. Again, this is just plain dead wrong...the 101st was the ONLY division (of nearly 50) of the American Army in Europe surrounded by the Germans during that battle...or any battle, for that matter. These are issues of the most basic military history that he gets absurdly wrong.I didn't keep notes, so those are the ones that stood out in particular, but there were others that weren't as patently obvious. He also seems to exaggerate the influence of the three Aviators at several points. For instance, he claims one was directed to inform air corps personnel during speeches in N. Africa and the Mediterranean theaters that their minimum tours had been extended. I highly doubt a visiting civilian would be tasked with personally informing thousands of airmen of a MAJOR policy change in their assignments. I suppose it's possible in the remotest sense, but I rolled my eyes at the likelihood of it.He also claims the Doolittle raid essentially led to what ultimately became the Japanese defeat. Hmmm, every other historian and war leaders at the time agreed it's only real value was a morale boost...and nothing more. He also refers to the German JU-88 light bombers that attacked Doolittle's B-17 as one of the most dangerous German planes in their arsenal. Ha! Not exactly. Any single-engine fighter (the JU-88 was a twin-engine light bomber) would have been MUCH more dangerous. These may seem like nit-picks, but they're such basic mistakes, and the more subtle exaggerations were sufficiently commonplace that it left a poor taste in my mouth and led me to be skeptical of the overall factual accuracy of the book. Also, there's really nothing new in it that one couldn't get from any number of biographies of the principals that has already been written. He doesn't really tie in the experiences of the three into any cohesive or overarching premise as to how they collectively...as a coordinated threesome...advanced aviation.Still, I gave it 3 stars, because it IS a fairly entertaining read, I learned a few things (I think...if they were fully accurate anyway), and it's a fast read. Just remember to have some grains of salt on-hand if you do read it.

A jumble of facts (some mistakes) put together to form a book. Not enough time for a good biography of any of the three men chosen. Not really a history of aviation due to lack of timeline and failure to include so many other contemporary contributors. Had way too much personal information on Lindbergh in comparison with the other two men. Made poor use of a great deal of good research. Would recommend spending your time on true biographies/autobiographies in order to get a better sense of the things that these pioneers accomplished. Chuck Yeager, Jackie Cochran, Beryl Markham, the Wright Brothers, and so many other amazing people have written some of the most interesting books I have ever read. Berg' s book on Lindbergh is superb along with Doolittle' s own book on his life.

A nicely done compilation of histories of three of America's most famous and influential aviators. The choice was well made and the story chronicles the parallel lives of Lindbergh, Doolittle and Rickenbacker nicely. There were some jarring and glaring errors that a competent and knowledgeable editor should have caught, i.e: Germany did NOT invade Sweden and Finland during WWII as was otherwise asserted by the author. This was not the only such error, just one of the most memorable. Also some snippy/snarky asides by the author that I didn't feel belonged in this kind of work. Those aside I did very much enjoy the book, would recommend it and might even read it again someday. Would have gotten 4 stars w/o the mis-steps. This was also one of the first Kindle books I've ever read, trying to wrench my 58 year-old self into the 21st century.

This is an engaging, well-written history of three important figures instrumental in the early history of and the development of aviation on a world scale. As an aviation writer myself, I know much of the history Groom covers, but there are certainly revelations in the book that were new to me, especially about Rickenbacker. Similarly, Lindbergh's combat experience in the Pacific was more extensive than I had realized. It could have used a good review by an aviation-savvy editor, however. There are numerous technical descriptions that, while not flat out wrong, aren't very accurate, either. Nonetheless, the book is a quick, informative read that I would recommend for any reader interested in the history of aviation.

I should have read the other reviews. Luckily, you are reading this... so move along. This is NOT "The Secret Garden". It is "A CONSIDERABLY ABRIDGED Cliff's Notes style childrens re-enactment of The Secret Garden". Nowhere in the description did it say that this was not the real book. It's like half an inch think written in 25 pt. font. My 10 year old daughter read it in less than an hour. Her last book.... Little Women. The real one. 800 pages. I promised her she would like this. Instead she just looked at me like..."really?". And I don't blame her. Seller should update the description.Sorry, but anyone else leaving a higher rating may simply not realize that they received a fraud.PROS: Very pretty cover. Hardback.CONS: See everything I wrote above.

People are naturally inclined to hand out the "instant classic" award to the books they like, but there are only a precious few books that can hold on to such a title for over a hundred years, (this was published in book form in 1911), and still stay fresh, engaging and appealing. This book is the source and template for so many children's lit conventions that it is hard to imagine a library without multiple copies. You can sample the book as a Kindle freebie or in some other downloadable form, since it's out of copyright and readily available. Then, and better yet, after you read it and discover its pleasures, look for a nice edition to give to each young reader you know. There are easy to read books that are shallow, and there are harder to read books with considerable depth, but this one manages to be accessible to a fairly young reader and yet still loaded with fine writing, style, character, mystery, romance, adventure and inspiration. An excellent choice. And while you're at it, take a look at Burnett's "Little Lord Fauntleroy". He's gotten a bad rap, (probably as a result of those Fauntleroy suits and haircuts that were the rage in the twenties), but he's actually smart , level headed, and shrewdly decent in unexpected ways. So go and get your Burnett on.

I am not really sure how I missed out on this book as a child so I decided to read it with my daughter. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and zipped through it in just a few days. Frances Hodgson Burnett shares some amazing insights into human nature with the reader. My daughter exclaimed at one point, “How can Mary see that Colin is spoiled but not see that she was the same at first too?” Led to some great discussions for sure! I also thought it was amazing that Burnett at times switches between different third person limited perspectives and we even have some of the events in the garden narrated from the point of view of the robin! Such clever writing! Some reviewers complained about the fact that many of the characters speak with a Yorkshire accent and Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote it phonetically the way the characters pronounced the words. I thought it added to the fun! I tried to speak with the broad Yorkshire accent as I read it out loud and changed my voice for the different characters. My daughter and I both loved it. The Yorkshire dialect was interesting and we have been trying to throw some of the words we learned into conversation such as “wick” meaning alive or lively. From my point of view, that beats trying to throw something modern like “on fleek” into conversation!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very well developed. The story was interesting, it was difficult to put down the book. The writing style, the description of events... you name it.. everything is just perfect. Thus it deserves a 5 star rating. This was my first ever kindle in motion ebook and it was good enough not know what exactly to expect. Say 10-15 pictures with motion in a book with around 21 chapters and over 250 pages. There were very few pages with illustration in motion (not many) and others with sketches of flowers. There were branches on all corners of each page and i loved that as the story proceeds, those blanches are full of leaves and flowers.I enjoyed reading this book and I hope you do too. Please hit the like button if you found my review helpful. Thank you.

I never read this as a child, and I think I'm glad. Reading it now, as an over-60, garden-loving mom with lots of life experience, I think I appreciate it a lot more, although I would have loved the mystery as a kid. Now I can appreciate the serious racism, the sad child(ren) neglect, the rather pagan awakening to nature (clothed as "Magic"), and the joyous, if obvious, ending. I believe the writing was very good for its time, and had no problem with the Yorkshire dialect. Mary and Colin and Dickon all struck me as very believable characters, and the changes wrought in Mary and Colin were overall pretty credible, although they happened a bit too quickly. I had more of a problem with Archibald's rejection of his son for ten whole years. Dwelt just a bit much on the beauty and changeableness of the moors. Well worth reading.

“… the Night Ferry offered the novelty of being seasick on a train. There was a porcelain seasickness bowl in every compartment, and luggage was secured in a net. This blurring of travel categories was part of its fascination. There was a lifebelt in every compartment …” ‒ from NIGHT TRAINS, referring to the pre-Channel Tunnel London to Paris overnight sleeperHaving experienced overnight sleeper trains in the United States ‒ beginning in 1961 on a Los Angeles to Grand Canyon run and most recently on Amtrak’s Los Angeles to Albuquerque service, I was attracted to Andrew Martin’s NIGHT TRAINS: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE SLEEPER thinking it might be relevant to my American journeys. I discovered I was misled, though not by any malicious intent on the part of the author.Martin’s NIGHT TRAINS is a nostalgic look at the sleepers of EUROPE, and should appeal to readers whose attachment to those rail services derives from either actually travelling on them or vicarious exposure via twentieth century films and literature. However, my only experience with such was a 1984 sleeper from Moscow to Leningrad, an encounter so lacking charm and substance that I can’t recall the details of the departure and arrival stations or the transit between! The author’s standard for excellence is apparently the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (Wagon-Lits, WL or W-L) during its heydays of the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. This company most famously operated the rolling stock of the “Orient” sleeper expresses. Here, in an attempt to relive (albeit perhaps unsatisfactorily) the classic experience, Martin travels on six overnight sleepers that were currently still operating at the time of his research for the book (but not necessarily at publication). These included the “Blue Train”, the “Nordland Railway”, the “Sud Express”, the “Berlin Night Express”, and the “Orient Express.” For one such as myself not acquainted or enamored of European sleeper services, this part of Andrew’s narrative provided some minimal entertainment value. Otherwise, too much of NIGHT TRAINS is an unexciting recitation of facts, such as (regarding the Sud Express):“The opening, in 1895, of the line running west from (Medina del Campo) to Fuentes de Onoro on the Portuguese border gave the option of cutting out Madrid, which the Sud Express had previously passed through. The option wasn’t always taken, and the train would divide at Campo for either Lisbon or Madrid.”Well, ok. Whatever.NIGHT TRAINS is likely a must read for a niche audience. Conceding that, I’ll award a generous but noncommittal three stars and leave the rave reviews to the readers who care more about the topic than I.I should note in conclusion that another travel narrative, Walk the Lines: The London Underground, Overground by Mark Mason, was also written for a niche audience. In that case, since I inordinately love London and its Underground, I was able to relate and give a positive review. I get it.

An enjoyable read - both charting the business side of the rise and fall of night trains and the personal side of Martin's love affair with them. the author's writing style makes this a quick, enjoyable read, an informed "getaway" if you are looking to both learn something and enjoy some light reading at the same time.

I once headed a physics book review "Not for me, but may suit others" which does not seem to have been well received. Perhaps the same will apply to its reverse here. Railway books come in many forms, from those which give serious detail about the need for extra coal on the fire when approaching a certain incline, to those in which the train is simply incidental to the destinations visited. This one hits exactly the right note for me. One's given a vivid description of the experience of travelling on the train, including the atmosphere and architecture of the the endpoint stations (and, occasionally, some of the others). In addition (and this is what really appeals to me) there is a wonderful contrast with what the experience used to be like. The depressing point is that the luxury seems to have been removed: silver service dining has been replaced by microwaved meals on paper plates. Teak, mahogany and marquetry decor has been replaced by plastics. On the other hand, it seems that the lack of traveller numbers means that passengers are given the sort of individual attention from the train crew which is so badly lacking on the standard commuter routes. As well as writing entertainingly, the author provides ample references to descriptions of the same journeys in movies and books, both fiction and nonfiction, from various eras. Personally, I'm not much motivated to check any of these out, but next time I visit the UK, I plan to take one of the train experiences which aim to recapture the luxury of what rail travel used to entail.

Written with detail yet quite a breezy read for the regular non rail person. Fascinating history and travel journey on various existing night trains (sleepers). My guess is that Norway and Russia will be the best remaining rides.

Wonderful history of the vanished and vanishing overnight trains of Europe, with the author's well written and often wry descriptions of his efforts to recreate them today.

Recommended reading for those who love passenger trains in general. The subject is European trains, so almost nothing applies to North America. The author is knowledgeable, the subject material is well rehearsed. The author's style includes digressions into many stories, histories, and anecdotes about the trains covered. It is part travel reporting and mostly just interesting reading for the train buff. If you don't like British writing styles or are looking for information on American trains, don't buy it.

#58,761 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I read this book when I was in aprox. 5th grade. I was young then so I never investigated further but now that I'm older I am reading everything I can about this man and his gift. I bought this book for my son. If you have any interest in self spiritual progress this is a must read! My personal recommendation is read this first to learn about Edgar Cayce first then dive in with both feet. You will be truly blessed by what you will learn.

This is quite possibly one of the most important books ever written. It introduces us to the life and work of Edgar Cayce, one of the best documented psychics (prophets?) ever. Had it not been for works of people such as Cayce, Paul Solomon and a few others, we may be still living in dark ages not really knowing that there is so much more to life than meets the eye (and that modern institutions would have one believe).I also want to add here that I own three copies of this book: the original 1943 edition with publishing date of Dec.1942, printed in 1943 by Henry Holt and Company, Inc.; the 1972 edition printed in 1972 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston and same size and format as the original 1943 book, and the new paperback edition, published in 1997 by the A.R.E. press.Due to a review posted here by a "perceptive lady", I went through pain of comparing the three books (not to mention the cost of acquiring the original first edition) to see if she was telling the truth. Since the new book is so much smaller (dense text of smaller size can save quite a bit of space) I thought that it was quite possible that some contents may have been lost. However, after spending numerous hours comparing the three texts I found absolutely no difference between them. Zero, nothing, zilch, nada, null, bupkis. The new edition, has pictures of Edgar Cayce and A.R.E from the times when it was first founded, which I find a very nice addition. So if anything, the new edition is better than the old one. However, I am old fashioned and I like the big print and hard cover of the old editions. But other than that, absolutely nothing is lost with this new edition. It is just too bad that those who do a really good job are attacked for no good reason. One should make sure that what they claim is true, is really true. And others should also check for themselves before they trust a passionate but untrue review such as the one by the "perceptive lady".

I recently discovered EC, after hearing a couple of friends talking about him. What I heard tickled my interest enough to search him out and buy some of his books. What I've read so far feels intuitively right to me. I can feel that EC is NOT a fake or a charlatan as so many out there... I came to trust him and to heed what he has to say. Read a book or two about him and make up your own mind. Reading EC has stretched the limits of my own envelop. I'm glad I came across Edgar Cayce!

As a lifelong Christian, this book helped clarify and connect my faith with the metaphysical teachings that I've been learning & researching. To read of the struggles this man had trying to understand and use his God given gift of healing while reconciling it with his deeply held Christian beliefs gave me lots of encouragement. The prose was a little old fashion but not hard to read or understand. I highly recommend it for anyone who is being led into the mysterious but still has a faith in the traditional religions.

Very, very interesting. Actually, I feel closer to God after reading this book. That is a good thing.I think he is right. I do believe God was speaking thru him. Cayce kept saying he did not want his gift to cause harm. He said if the gift caused harm it was not from God. if it brought good, it was from God. He gift never hurt anyone....so it had to be from God. Cayce gave all credit to God, not himself. Wish there was someone like him today. Maybe there is - have you heard of John of God in Brazil? He was featured on Oprah's magazine several years ago, Dr. OZ spoke about him as did Dr. Wayne Dryer.

I originally purchased an early version of Edgar Cayce's, "There Is a River" book. I thought this cover/book was the version that i originally purchased; however this book DID NOT HAVE an ~epilogue chapter on the "Son's of Belial". That is the reason I purchased this book; hence I was disappointed. It seems to me that this book edited out the originally "Sons of Belial" chapter of the end of Cayce's original book. Note there were 3 or 4 covers on this book, I guess each one was a reprint of the earlier version. However they did not contain all of the info of the original one. mike

It's been several years since I have studied Cayce or any of his work, but I loved this book! It's clear that the author knew Mr. Cayce and he took great detail in telling the Cayce story. If you find Edgar Cayce and the subject of Clairvoyance as intriguing as I do, then you will enjoy this book. I have visited his museum in Virginia Beach and will never forget the positive energy that I felt while I was there. Most likely, this story will leave you with more questions that may lead you down your own path of discovery. Enjoy!

The personal stories of Cayce's life and the struggle that he went through with his Christian faith and his gift were detailed and interesting. By the time that I finished, I felt as though I knew him and his wife. Some of his remedies are described also and many of his readings were described.

A couple of weeks ago I was searching for a different kind of thesaurus recommended by Tina, a cousin-writer. I put the book in the shopping cart and spotted a Descriptionary. The price was right and my interests piqued so I bought that one as well - you can never have too many books. When the two books arrived I knew they were different immediately - all six-pounds worth. The Descriptionary has everything indexed so that it is easy to find. Each main title has smaller sections that cover almost anything you could imagine. The first main title is Animals and Insects, then under that there are sections like Animal Groups and Insects and Spiders; under those there are even smaller sections. It has been so much fun to read that I stay up later at night to read, just like a regular dictionary. Here are some of the main titles:Architecture, Art, Clothing and Fashion, Electronics, Environment, Finance, Food and Drink, Furniture, Human Body and Mind, Language, Law, Magic and the Occult, Medicine, Military, Music, Occupations, Performing Arts and Broadcasting, Religions, Science, Sports, Tools, Transportation, Weapons and lastly, Words and Expressions You Should Know. For example, under the main title of Military there are several sections, one of those is Air Force and Aircraft. Under that it lists things that pertain to that like "aeromedical evacuation - The transport of patients to and between hospital facilities by air" and "dumb bomb - any unguided bomb."The book is 711-pages long and at every turn you will find something to interest you. I love this book.

This is an excellent resource to find words in specific themed categories. There are a lot of words and different categories. It has saved my life several times whilst writing. It doesn't have everything, nor does it give an extensive description of the words, it's just enough to help you find things you are thinking for but can't remember the name or something similar. It's a great book overall.

I love this and got much poetry material from it. Also bought a copy for my 'word nerd' friend who wanted one of his own. A very unique reference book unlike a thesaurus; very specialized vocabularies- lots of scientific terms you may not stumble upon otherwise unless you are a specialist in those areas or you know exactly what you're looking for.Really valuable, fun and what a bargain.

You know when you're thinking of a word but you just can't quite find it, or you want to know all the terms and synonyms in a certain category? Well, this book is the one you're looking for! The book is easy to navigate, and definitely a lifesaver!

I gave away several soft cover copies as gifts. I got this hard cover as I know I will use it often for many years.

As a writer, I really needed a book like this. Not only does it fill the hole and help me find the word I needed, but it gives me new ideas because of the way it's organized by theme.A great resource for anyone who does any writing of any type.

Quick reference for writers. Fun to keep on hand for conversationalists who look for new words.

I refer to this book constantly.....a great reference tool for any writer.

Simply put, this is the most important book on advertising you will ever read.(I owned the first edition way back in the late 90s and it was so good that somebody stole it.)So much has been updated in this fifth edition that I consider it a sequel/reboot, but in a very good way. It’s essential to those working on either the creative or account side of the biz, and written in Human English instead of Buzzspeak so you can actually get something out of what you’re reading.“Hey, Whipple…” is truthfully a trade triumph. If you work in advertising, you need this book (but please, buy a copy rather than steal one).

I didn't think this classic book on how to concept, create and execute advertising could get any better. What Edward Boches added to Sullivan's brilliantly thought out how-to was something I thought would be almost impossible: to guide, illuminate and understand today's incredibly complex and ever changing digital world and capture it between the covers of a book. I would recommend this for anyone wanting to enter the field of advertising and marketing. I would especially recommend it for anyone who's been in the field for years and wants to catch up.

As an author, I dabble in marketing to get my work known. Reading this book was a glimpse into the world of advertising creatives and gave me some great ideas on everything from television and radio to online web experiences for customers. This book is brilliantly written in an engaging style that will make you forget this is non-fiction. Couldn't recommend this book more highly.

This book has been rightly, for some time, the most practical guide to making ads. And the 5th edition is the best yet thanks to a brilliant section from Edward Boches on how digital is transforming creativity. Rather than the usual myopic view of digital as a channel, Edward looks at how digital is transforming the nature of business and therefore transforming how creative companies need to think and what they make. Highly readable and highly recommended.

Significant update to an already much appreciated book. The new chapters covering how the world of digital fits into the existing framework are excellent and a significant reason to upgrade from the 4th edition as I did.I can now say with confidence - if in marketing, advertising, or related fields - buy this book. Its the foundational text on areas of creative development including work in the online realm. Don't go for earlier editions; this is enough of a difference that it should be 5th edition only.

got this book on marketing. it's easy to read. lot's of good case studies, pictures and examples. quick reading too.it's really helped us with some marketing and understanding the process.highly recommend

Lee Clow endorses this book on the back cover.I can't say anything that eclipses that. If you don't know who Lee Clow is- you probably shouldn't be in advertising, but, that's OK- after you read this book- you should be fully prepared- and know who Lee Clow is.If you are in advertising, or in school learning about advertising, or a feckless client trying to learn how to advertise- buy this book.Full disclaimer, my name is in the fifth edition- and I host and tweaked the website [...] for Luke, so he's a client, and he pays me- but, I'd recommend the book anyway. I did for the first 4 editions- and no money changed hands. How good is this book? If my college professor had me read this instead of the shitty textbook put out by some PhD- I'd have been winning awards and making my clients money so much faster. But, unfortunately, I had to wait years for Luke to graduate from being in "The Copywriters Bible" to actually writing it....at least the book I make every one in my small agency read as terms of their employment. I don't only insist employees read it, that goes for interns as well. And after years of asking clients to read it too- I finally had one read it- and felt like I was working on an account destined for a new level of greatness- because, well, a real understanding of the craft and science of advertising sure helps the creative process along.I've read each edition. This one, with the additional chapters from Edward Boches, once again succeeds in explaining everything you need to know in order to create the 5% of advertising that matters- that engages, entertains, sells- as opposed to the 95% that was created for the TiVo skip button or adblockers on your browser. While this book won't turn you into Lee Clow, Luke Sullivan, Alex Bogusky, Dan Wieden, David Droga or even me- it will help you know what good advertising is and how some of the greats have made it.And, you'll enjoy reading it- because Luke writes good ;-)
