I'm no romantic about the kibbutz movement, but Batya Gur certainly managed to find a lot of people who were beyond disillusioned with it and put them all into one book (along with a catalog of peculiar and rigid members who cast the movement in a poor light). Michael Ohayon, her detective character, does his usual good job figuring things out, and goes one step further toward revealing his personal life to another human being. The writing just isn't that good, even allowing for the vagaries of translation, and too many of the very large cast of characters have similar names. A few of the characters are portrayed in a vivid and individual manner, but most are not.In our book club about â…” of the attendees claim to have guessed the identity of the murderer early on, despite a veritable school of red herrings.
This is an unusual mystery story that gives an inside look to life on a kibbutz. While much has been written about the kibbutz phenomenon, and while there are only a few of them remaining in Israel, interest in them remains high. The plot is unusual. It helps to have some knowledge of modern Israel before reading this book, but it's not absolutely necessary. It's a good read, just the thing when other mysteries all begin to seem very much alike.
I've come to Batya Gur late in my reading life and have relished every one of her mysteries but Murder on a Kibbutz is, in my opinion, her best. In addition to enjoying the pleasures of Michael Ohayon's company, we're introduced to a wonderful cast of kibbutz characters that, like Gur's Holocaust survivors, will soon no longer exist in real life. She gets them down exactly right, along with the kibbutz dining room and holiday festivities and endless communal meetings -- she's even got the refet exactly as it is. In a patriarchal country where careers in literature are hard to come by for women, Gur carved out a unique niche of her own. I'm so sorry that she died at 57 and that there will be no further work coming from her.
Gur takes the reader deep inside the insular world of an Israeli kibbutz and shows how a murder can unhinge the entire community. A murder in a kibbutz has the same impact as a murder in a close family, with the killer still at large and presumed to be a family member. Investigator Michael Ohayon cracks the case but first has to overcome the resistance of the kibbutzim, who bitterly resent outsiders sniffing around. In all, the book is a good police procedural, but equally, it is an educational treatise on the changing kibbutz institution. A well-done book.
In addition to being an extremely well-plotted mystery, this is a wonderfully written piece of fiction that gives a sociological portrait of kibbutz life, opening up a tiny sector of Israeli society with a pointed lens. The contrasts between the secular, larger world of the police (who are drawn with great humor and sound very authentic) and the insular kibbutz world are quite delightful. The novel has warmth and insight. This is true literary fiction, with a definite style, and it may take a little time to immerse oneself in the world of the novel, but it is well worth it. Some of the kibbutz rules described in the novel are anachronistic, but this doesn't detract at all from one's enjoyment.
Batya Gur is becoming my favorite author. This story is a bit different from her other stories I've read so far- it focuses much more on the characters that help us understand kibbutz life rather than on Detective Michael Ohayon.
The detective in this series, Michael Ohayon moves from the city to the locale of a kibbutz that played a prominent role in the building of the nation. the author explores the ethos and the predilection for violence and agression within a supposedly peaceful collective.
I've learnt a secret: buy Used library books cuz the cover will always be well protected & it's interesting to see from where in the USA it'll come. The font size of paperbacks are getting too small.
