I’m at 20% and what I believe might be wrong with this story is that I have no idea what the story is. The Hating Game came on strong with that first sentence about love and hate and then the beautiful imagery and all that charm. It was love at first sight with that book and I loved, loved, loved it.But this book. Yikes. Two chapters in and I had no idea what the point of the story was. It’s two chapters of the heroine’s internal monologue of self-loathing with no point and no pay off. If I want that, I can just listen to the running monologue in my own head. I use fiction to escape my self-hatred, not the other way around. Finally, in chapter three, we meet the hero, things sort of pick up, and we find out that she has lusted after him since childhood but we are given no reason as to why she has never voiced her feelings or why they have never acted on whatever mutual attraction they have. So that is a mystery and we are instead given more of her inner monologue of self-loathing with the added bonus of finding out she’s basically a well-loved, spoiled girl who somehow believes she’s been wronged by all that love. She’s childish and self-absorbed and not in a charming way, just in an obnoxious, makes you want to slap her and tell her to grow up, get some therapy, and get over herself kind of way.By the end of chapter four, our heroine still comes off as so flakey, I am not convinced she is going to stick around and turn this into a romance novel. She seems like a flight risk and may very well grab her passport and bail on this poor man who probably deserves better than this girl who still has yet to display any redeeming qualities.I couldn’t bring myself to read further. I stayed up all night to read The Hating Game. I read it dozens of times. DOZENS. This is such a disappointment.I’m not sure I’m going to continue reading. I might just suck up the full price I paid and go read The Hating Game again and pretend this whole experience never happened. As an aside, I will say I am holding whomever edited this book accountable for it going off the rails. Sally Thorne is a lovely writer with tremendous talent and this book either needed a different editor or more direction or something. If you are undecided, maybe skip it. Just re-read The Hating Game and wait for her third novel. At a bare minimum, read the sample before you buy.
I decided to go into this novel with an open mind and fresh perspective. Even though in my mind I thought to myself, “self - Sally Thorne wrote what was easily your favorite rom-com tale with The Hating Game. She broke your heart with how good it was. There’s a good possibility that magic can’t be recreated, even from the same author.†So I did my best to put Lucy and Josh aside, and start with a clean slate for two completely different characters with a different history, different characteristics, and different storylines.Let me clue y’all into the fact that 99 Percent Mine and The Hating Game are like night and day in their differences. Darcy is a character that comes from a sadder, grittier place and she carries some baggage. There are a lot of f-bombs and colorful language for those who are sensitive to that, and they’re mainly used to highlight Darcy’s attempt to be tough girl on the outside while really being more fragile (literally, in some respects) on the inside. The first half of the book, I didn’t know if I liked the novel, to be honest. I think it helps to set an expectation: the first 130 pages or so are focused primarily on Darcy and the messy outlines of her life. Tom sort of runs in the background, but you have no clue about who he is or what makes him tick because there’s more inner monologues from Darcy than there are conversations with Tom or anyone else for that matter. The lack of interaction felt lonely to me, especially because Darcy seems to be on the fringe and doesn’t think much of herself. Once Darcy’s best friend Truly (wish there had been more scenes with her) enters the mix and Darcy actually starts to verbalize her true thoughts to those around her, the story becomes more human and easier to settle into. I’m all for characters who are flawed and more believable, but it just felt slightly black hole-ish to me in the beginning. The turning point of the tale regarding the romantic aspects happened for me at 45%, which was 164 pages in (Kindle count). If you’re a fan of Sally Thorne and like her writing, you won’t mind hanging in that long. If you’re on the fence, you might have already lost interest at that point. There were some moments that sparkled between Darcy and Tom, but other times their interactions were stilted and crude. There were a lot of back and forth hurdles that got tiring at points, especially because of the complicated dynamic between Darcy, her twin Jamie (who comes off very douchey at first), and Tom.I wanted to give this novel more stars, but I didn’t truly connect to the story until Darcy, Tom, and Jamie had their breaking point, and that wasn’t until 80% into the story. I’ll read more by Sally Thorne, but maybe next time I won’t preorder.
I absolutely loved the authors first book and recommend it to everyone. I've read it dozens of times. When this one came out I was eager to dive in. I felt like the story was lacking substance and the characters didn't grab me like the first book. It didn't seem like they had great chemistry and the main character was a little disappointing (personal preference)... Or maybe their stories weren't told fully? Not sure what it was but I felt like there were so many opportunities for the story to take off but it floundered. I'd suggest reading the hating game, but this one fell flat for me.
