In studying a language, it is beneficial to have a practical dictionary. Often you can't find a word in the text and a dictionary gives a wider scope of the language. This is a three-way dictionary: it has English-Lao, Lao (transliterated)-English, and Lao (script)-English (and Lao transliterated). A dictionary is especially helpful when learning to write Lao sentences. Using creative or humorous words can make learning easier.
As a Thai of Laotian and Cambodian ancestry, I bought this dictionary to improve my Lao language and learn Lao script. I was born in Udonthani, a province in Northeastern Thailand. People there speak Lao language (in Thailand it is called Isan language but written in Thai script). Thai and Lao are very close language but it is not exactly similar especially pronunciation and spelling. I found this dictionary is very handy. It can help me to read Lao script and check spelling. For non- native speakers, it will help you learn new words and read Lao newspaper. It is a very good dictionary on Lao but I feel like something is missing. It does not contain words about local food, fruits and animals in English-Lao section. There are some but not a lot. For example, you are a tourist in Laos. One day you go to a local market and find papaya (Ma-la-kor in Thai), fermented fish (Pla-ra in Thai) and buffalo meat. If you try to find these words in English-Lao section, you cannot find them. You will find them in phonetic Lao-English section but how you know to pronounce when you've never heard before. You need to ask a local to tell you what they are called in Lao. They are called Maak-hung (papaya), Pa-daek (fermented fish). You will find them in phonetic Lao-English section with Lao script. Unfortunately I cannot find word "buffalo" in this dictionary. It is a common animal in Laos. It is called Kuay (Kwai in Thai). Laotians eat buffalo meat too. If you are learning Thai and Lao in the same time, watch out for this word. In central part of Thailand including Bangkok, the word "Kuay" is a slang word for penis. Do not get confused. There is a joke about confusion between Thai and Lao language. A Thai man gets angry with his Laotian wife and tries to hit her. She says " Do not hit me" but he hits her very hard. The word "I, me" in Lao is pronounced as " Khoi" but in Thai language the word "Khoi" means " softly". He thinks his wife says " Do not hit softly". That's why he hits her very hard.Anyway, this dictionary is useful to learn Lao language. So buy it.
It is a very good 3 way dictionary: 1. From English to Lao, 2. From phonetic Romanized Lao to English (with Lao script also), 3. From Lao script to Romanization and English. So if you know the pronunciation but not the written form you can look it up in the second part, if you know the written form in Lao script but not necessarily the pronunciation, you can look it up in the 3rd part. There is also a good introduction to the Lao script, so people can learn it. For the script, the dictionary uses the recent spelling reform, that simplified the spelling considerably. But there is unfortunately almost no info on the old spelling rules, so if you read an old book, the dictionary is not as useful. At the end is a list of classifiers, but within the dictionary the words are not accompanied by their classifiers, so if you try to translate into Lao, you have to search the list. But then if you are learning Lao, you are also learning the classifiers, at least gradually. But if you have not mastered the classifiers, you have to search the list. So that is clumsy, slow. The list is alphabetical based on Lao, not on English, unfortunately. The other appendices are very good. One has words for numbers, so there you can find out Lao has a word for ten thousand, and another word for hundred thousand. That is useful to know, before you look up thousand in the English-Lao section, because there it does not tell you about it.The dictionary is useful for speakers of English, but less useful for speakers of Lao, since no pronunciation is given for the English words, nor past tense or participle given for irregular verbs.
Being in Isaan territory, I haven't had a chance to check the Lao written form yet, but the English to Lao, and Transliterations to Lao are quite helpful out here. The three sections are nice, though once the basic phonetics are mastered, the transliteration section will be virtually useless I assume. For a reference (especially for starters), it's a great buy, and worth having if you will be travelling to Northeast Thailand (Isaan area)or Laos.
It's a great small size for traveling. It was like brand new. Good thing it has a sleeve to protect the actual cover. Cause there's a big sticker on the sleeve. I bought one for my dad too. Thanks for the business.
This three way dictionary gives you the Lao word, the English word, and the pronounciation of the Lao word. I wish more dictionaries were made this way!
I was looking for a dictionary to learn Laos and I found it. The pronunciation, the meaning, and the simplicity to use this has been awesome. One thing I do not look forward to is the pages falling out😕. A friend has the same one and uses it often, the pages fall out.
Koi hien pasa lao. And I use this dictionary everyday!
