About the Author
Currently, I am a shift Division Chief for a Southern California Fire Department where I am assigned to manage the Special Services Division. In addition to managing the emergency responses for the city my responsibilities include managing the EMS Division, emergency Operations Center and the CERT program. With 28 years of experience in the fire service proctoring oral interviews and promotional examinations I decided to write several books for those aspiring firefighters. I have conducted numerous seminars at national conventions to teach and mentor both promotional and entry-level candidates alike. My objective in writing these books is to help the aspiring firefighter set a clearly defined goal, laying out the steps to reach it and diligently working to become the ideal candidate and ultimately a professional firefighter. The three books and one Audio CD I have written were published through Freespool Enterprises, DBA Aspiring Firefighters. In addition, my wife and I founded EMS Safety Services, Inc., which specializes in the development of emergency response educational programs and the retail of quality cost-effective emergency response products. This book by Chief Paul Lepore is definitely worth the money and the time. If you're serious about becoming a firefighter, you're going to need all the help you can get. It's a very competitive process, and this book will give you a leg up on your competition. Great scenario questions that really get you thinking. Chief Lepore gives great examples that show you how to start thinking like a firefighter. It's not about memorizing the "right" answers, but rather thinking clearly and speaking concisely to get the interview panel to understand who you are and why you're there.Also, if you live in southern California and are looking for more help beyond just this text, Chief Lepore offers in-person coaching for serious candidates. I had the chance to meet with him, and his insight was greatly appreciated and highly insightful. His book and in-person mock interviews are a perfect 1-2 punch to getting you on the right path towards a rewarding career as a firefighter.
I would recommend this book to any Fire/Medic in the process of getting hired with any agency or department. It is chalk full of good information that helps you to see inside the mind of a hiring board interviewer. I am a Fire/Medic candidate at on the best fire department in the state and I would recommend this to book to anyone looking to smoke the fire/medic interview.
This books gives you the best foundation that a individual who is testing needs to be in the top ranks of any departments list! I started reading this book in September while I started a joint testing process with three departments. Made it through a panel interview, and three chiefs interview. I felt like if it wasn't for this book, I wouldn't have been able to clearly think out my answers and present them confidently. This book makes you think about your answers and it also gives you great example of how you should do it. I just got my conditional offer of employment from one of the departments. Dont think about getting this book! Just do it!
Having reviewed a lot of different preparation books and programs for the fire department interview process, this book definitely stands out at the top. It is important to remember there is no single universal answer to every question, so it's helpful to study from multiple sources. But what I really liked about this book is that it takes the reader through the most common questions in a fire interview, gives them a sample answer, but then most importantly gives the reasoning behind why the author feels these are the most complete answers. It's important to understand what the question is really asking and then use the understanding of the question to provide your own unique answer. Every department does things a little different, but these questions seem to be the most common. Definitely a must have if you're applying to fire departments.
Much of what is said is common sense but I have gained some insight into the interview process. Hopefully it will help get hired. I will find out here shortly and hopefully report back. Anyone interviewing should buy it, its a small price to pay even if you learn one thing. You never know if that one thing helps you get hired.*EDIT*I believe things are changing in the fire service just as they are in the rest of society. If you live in a larger, liberal jurisdiction this book probably won't help you. The entire hiring process is changing in order to give everyone a fair shot. The CPAT and the video based testing are both borderline comical. The interview does not allow you to really show why you are a good canidate. Its just a bunch of P.C. BS and trickery. If you want to pass the interview, do this.1. Know EVERYTHING about the dept.2. Think of situations where you made a moral decision3. Think of situations where you had to do something you didn't want to do4. Think of situations where you worked as a team to solve a problem5. Think of situations where you made a mistake and you learned from it.6. RELAX7. Listen to the questions carefully, speak slowly and clearly.8. Be ready for trick questions.Good luck
For those that gave it negatives because the questions were not asked in their interviews:This book is not designed to have you memorize answers. What it is designed to do is build your ability to reason out the correct answer from a variety of questions DURING your interview. This book provides the why of your answer, which is what interviewers look for, not necessarily the answer itself.This book will build your confidence and allow you to ease through your Firefighter interview comfortably.
Great book! I have gone to probably 7 or 8 fire dept interviews and just now got the book before my last interview. I read most of it and practiced answering a lot of the questions with fellow candidates. It definately opened my mind up to the way of thinking that you need to answer a panel interview question thoroughly and concisely. I just found out I passed the last interview and am moving on to the chief's panel.This book gives many examples of typical interview questions for those newer candidates and hones the thinking and reasoning skills of people who have been repeatedly bombing interview questions. I'm confident I will do well on the chief's interview coming up thanks to Chief Lapore's insight.
This book is very easy to read and fireman friendly. There is a ton of information in this book that directly applied to many of my interviews.It doesn't just give you the answers to many questions, but it gives you the reasoning so you can give it your own personal spin.So far after buying this book I was able to get 4 career offers. I can say for sure this book gave me the edge I needed.
