I was hoping to get more ideas on poses and backgrounds. Quite detailed on the specifics of photography.

The best of this book is the balance between the technical information and ideas for shooting, leaving from the commonplace. Says the author of the book that many amateur photographers or hobbyists begin photographing children when they become parents. It is at this point that this book becomes useful, showing the necessary photographic techniques for child and teen photography and lots of interesting ideas, easy to hold, able to make your photos more interesting and with great quality.

VERY EDUCATIONAL

This book has been my favorite since the last edition. Amateur and pro can benefit. While a pro may not need the basics (which are provided clearly, practically and concisely!) it also has some great creative ideas, My favorite part is the insight only a seasoned master pro can give. It's also nice to have a complete book - covering camera basics, set up basics and post processing basics. I fnd myself going back to it more than my other books.

If you want to photograph kids......this book is worth reading from cover to cover.

This book is exactly what I was looking for - I had searched all the big stores for something like it, but couldn't find it. Finally, a book that is thorough and informative in a way that I had been looking for! The author is the epitome of professional and kind to boot. The answer is no ... or yes, depending on what form and/or market your writing is goaled toward. If a science fiction novel was written to include every element presented in this manual, it would be as boring as reading a detailed summary of how to climb a step ladder. If you get too lost in the guidelines, you'll lose your creativity. A being with rubbery skin can live on a wet planet, but you don't have to detail that being's evolution from primordial ooze to rubber man down to the details of its DNA.Writing "hard" science fiction is much different from writing "fantasy" science fiction, or "softer" science fiction. Mieville's cactus people wouldn't exist if he'd followed the restrictive rules of hard sci-fi, and they are intriguing. Mieville didn't build a world with climate, rotation, axis position, mean distance from a sun, the type of sun, or any other hard facts, he just made his species absorbable and intriguing. The presumption that even "hard" science fiction is for mathematicians, physicists, professors, scientists, and total numbers-geeks is preposterous and insolent.You'll have to ask yourself, as a writer, "how far do you want to go?" Are you writing science or science fiction? Is this a thesis or compelling imagery? Schmidt pointed out that certain people write in to the publisher when the hard facts are shaky, but remember that these are guys portrayed by the "comic book guy" in The Simpsons. Do you cater to the few who don't have a life or do you use your creative talent to entertain the majority?Even one of the stories mentioned by Schmidt, Stanley G. Weinbaum's "A Martian Odyssey" didn't follow such strict guidelines as Schmidt presents, and still created one of the most intriguing aliens to have ever graced the written word. Weinbaum didn't explain Tweel's evolution, or any evolution on Mars, he didn't explain the rocket propulsions or the thermal sleeping bags or the reason Earth beings went to Mars, but he created a story that holds intrigue throughout many generations and is classified as "hard" science fiction (with humor). Heinlein rarely went into the details described in this book, nor Norton, but they are still classic Sci-Fi writers. Both Star Trek and Star Wars have broken apart Schmidt's theory of "necessary fundamentals".Actual "writing about aliens" doesn't start until chapter eight, continuing through chapter nine. Many readers may give up before then. Science Fiction (IMHO) 'supposedly' takes for granted the fact that warp travel, or faster-than-light travel is accepted, I find no need to extrapolate a hard-science based core for this, whereas the author seems to think it's mandatory. I honestly don't believe the modern science fiction reader requires an extensive physics lecture to believe in faster-than-light travel.Still, this book, IMHO, should be required reading for anyone who writes "hard" sci-fi or "fantasy" sci-fi. While the physics of the writing may seem overwhelming, the ideas you can (and will) develop from reading over the intricacies of foundation writing are invaluable. For the "hard" sci-fi writer this will be a beginner's manual, for the "fantasy" sci-fi writer it will be a guideline and an inspiration. Schmidt says, "The very essence of science fiction is that you'll be creating situations that no one has had to deal with before - and then inventing ways to deal with them." He quotes Hal Clement as saying, "Work out your world and its creatures as long as it remains fun; then write your story, making use of any of the details you have worked out which help the story." If you work within the strict guidelines of this book, Michael Crichton's "Jurassic Park" is "hard" science fiction rather than general fiction. (as would be many of Crichton's novels)The Pros: The book is heavy with great references in both non-fiction and fiction, though the fictional references seem to be highly restricted to a clutch of about ten books rather than the broad range offered by hard sci-fi authors, plus there is an extensive reference, a glossary, and an index.The Cons: With all the technical physics, technical astronomy, bioengineering, evolutionary and anthropological sciences introduced at the beginning, a budding writer might lose hope or interest before getting to the meatier parts of the book. These chapters, however, are necessary.My recommendation is that if you are serious about either "hard" or "fantasy" sci-fi writing, you should pick up a copy of this book, but not as a "starter" for goals or inspiration. Rather, this book will fill out your thoughts and creativity after being stimulated by other, easier to read writing introductions. Good luck, and Enjoy!

This is a good reference book. It explains what life might be like in certain star systems and what suns can support life. It has some science. It also tells you how to look at various cultures and develop your own through creative thinking and logic as well as looking at ecosystems on earth and how they could survive and develop as cultures. We really have everything here on earth that could be considered alien in one form of animal or another. This book helps you think about how and why your alien culture thinks and how it has evolved.

The details in this book are pretty thick but the author explains it in a way that even a layman can understand. Some of the science feels a little dated, given that the book was published almost 20 years ago, but it still makes for an interesting read. Definitely gets you thinking along the right tracks if you're planning to invent your own aliens for your novel.

The book is not just about aliens and alien societies. It also deals with making proper stars and planets and what alien science might be like. Could of used more details on the subject of planet building, but there are other works that get into the nuts-and-bolts of that subject. This book touches lightly on alien culture, view points and history, not just the science of building an alien creature. Also, some of it might be outdated with our increasing knowledge of other planets and solar systems. It looks more and more like our idea of planet forming and how systems form might be slightly incorrect (if not out right wrong). That is why I held back a star.

They're not reading 'chapter books' just yet - they're great with the typical, simple and short kid-books we read front-to-back each night. I have 'Extreme Ownership' and was concerned JW's style may be too advanced, dry, preachy or over my twins' heads...WotWK proved me wrong!With "Way of the Warrior Kid," I set the expectation of one chapter a night. Once finished with the single chapter I tell them the name of tomorrow night's chapter to whet their appetite. Invariably, they beg, "One more chapter! Just one more!" It's written in a great first-person style the kids relate to. The illustrations and "I stink" humor of the wimpy Marc engage my kiddos and there is anticipation built into each chapter that makes us wanting to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. Salt.Jocko's jiu-jitsu training has moved from the mat to the written word: the lessons are not delivered with telegraphed haymakers but with 'subliminal, verbal judo' and allegory.I'm so glad I took a chance and got this for our family. Lessons and lectures from dad can meet with resistance and eye-rolling (akin to teaching my wife handgun skills), but coming from a third party the instruction is eagerly welcomed! "...a prophet is not accepted in his hometown..."Now they are more eager to exercize (loved how they lit up when "burpees" were mentioned in the book - "hey, we know them, Dad! You taught us those!") And when it is homework or get-ready time I remind my kids about Marc and Uncle Jake - and suddenly they're all in. They used to whine when it was mean ol' dad asking, but they'll do what's needed when characters they admire/identify with or like from the book show them the benefit of discipline.If this became a franchise ala 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' we'd be all in for future installments. Reading this has opened us up to more substantive reading - we'll weave in some quality kids books to our nightly reading that are beyond the fluff of kittens, Minecraft and Dr.Seuss thanks to TWotWK.The book will definitely support the 'all in, all the time' credo we're inculcating into our little ones.HOOYAH!p.s. "Zero dark-thirty" is now a part of my son's vocabulary and he laughs every time he says it and my daughter loves to say how she and mom need garbage can lids being clanged to wake up. It's been a great opportunity for bonding and laughing (while sneakily influencing their behavior!).

I got my first experience with Jocko from his other book Extreme Ownership and liked what he had to say.So, I bought this book so that my 8 yr old son and I could read it together. 1. To toughen him up a little and 2. To get him interested in reading on his own.Each night we would read 2-3 chapters before bedtime and before long, he kept asking me during the day if we were going to read it again that night.We both started referencing points in the book at times when something reminded us of it and began sharing the stories with friends and family.Before the end of the book, my son would be getting up early, setting his alarm to be the second out of bed, after dad.At the end of the book, my son asked if we could buy the 2nd book in the series...It's been about a week since we finished the book and last night he began reading the book on his own from the start.This is exactly what we needed. I didn't take a single bite of that pudding."Suddenly he sensed the presence of someone other than his son. As he turned his gaze, their eyes locked."J-j-j-j-jocko?!", he stuttered."Good Evening, Dad", grumbled a smirking Jocko Willink."How did you... What are you...""I am sorry, Dad. This was the only way for me to get YOU to take YOUR medicine."Jocko went on to explain how he pulled off this elaborate con known in the SEAL Teams as The Willink Switcharoo. The objective of The Willink Switcharoo is for Jocko to implant an idea into someone's mind so stealthily that they believe they came up with it. With his target consumed with the execution of "their" idea, Jocko is able to slip in and administer the needed intervention to the unconscious target.After realizing what happened, Dad was speechless. About the Author

Allyn Washington was born and educated in Connecticut, where he also began teaching at Trinity College, his alma mater. He taught at Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) before joining the newly forming Dutchess Community College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he began writing "Basic Technical Mathematics," At the time, technical mathematics did not have a text that gave students the math they needed to successfully achieve their goals in the technical mathematics program. Al decided to write a book that specifically aligned itself with the technical programs these students were taking. He wanted his text to be flexible, allowing instructors to teach in ways that would most benefit their students. Through his vision and determination, Allyn Washington created the "Technical Mathematics" series. Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of "Elementary Statistics, 10th Edition," "Elementary Statistics Using Excel,"" Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83 84 Plus Calculator," and he is a co-author of "Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences,"" Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life," and "Business Statistics," He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on "Elementary Statistics," Ellena Reda is the Department Head of the Mathematics, Physical and Computer Sciences Department at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She began her career at DCC in 1988 as an adjunct instructor. Ellena received her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Marist College, her Master's degree in Mathematics/Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and an advanced graduate certificate in Educational Computing from the University at Stony Brook. She is the program coordinator at DCC for the Verizon Next Step Program, has served as the program's mathematics curriculum leader, and has taught a variety of courses in this technical program. Ellena is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. She was a writing team member of the NSF - AMATYC Math Works Project. She was the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Grant and a team leader/teacher leader for the State Professional Development Collaborative, an NSF/ATE Grant. In spring 2005 she was named a Regional Teacher of the Year by the New York State Technology Education Association. Ellena has co-authored the "Excel Manual" that accompanies "Elementary Statistics," 8th, 9th and 10th editions written by Mario Triola. In her spare time Ellena enjoys golfing, running, and reading. In 2003 she ran her first marathon to raise money for the AmericanStroke Association. Since then she has run 2 marathons and 3 half-marathons. She has three grown children and lives locally with her husband.

The rented book arrived in bad condition. The cover was so dingy that when I wiped it with a wet wipe, the cloth had black grime on it! The binder was loose, which is probably to be expected but a little unnerving because you don't want the thing to fall apart on you. The worst part for me was that it had hair and other disgusting dried matter (food and what appeared to be boogers) attached throughout the pages. Needless to say, I returned it and will not choose an "acceptable" conditioned book again.

Decent books to use for the pre-2015 mcat. Strategies here are pretty useless; if you're already using PR strategies, you don't have time for any of this "advanced" stuff. However, wish I had done a few more passages out of here, since they give you really long passages. None of the other materials did this, so I was thrown a little by how long the passages were on the real test. Would have been nice to have done a few more like these.

Should be okay, but don't depend solely on this to get a high score. This will pretty much become obsolete when the new MCAT comes out Spring 2015, so make sure you don't buy it if you plan to take the MCAT after January 2015.

This is a new, first edition MCAT preparation workbook. The primary aim of the book is to introduce a methodical, step-by-step approach to the MCAT which can truthfully be applied to any standardized test.Roughly the first half of this book teaches you how to effectively take practice tests. It first directs you to take a practice test available on the Princeton Review website. Then, it demonstrates how to correct your test and hone in on the problems you missed by using their rating system.The second half of the book is divided topically as follows: general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and biology. Within each chapter, there is a brief reproduction of the list of concepts which will be tested on the MCAT (similar to the list provided by the AAMC.) Then, it provides about 50 questions per subject area to practice with (about 10 passages and several stand alone questions per subject.)All-in-all, this workbook provides a unique approach to test taking. For me, it's just a little bit gimmicky and the process a little time consuming. I'm not sure that I need a cumbersome rating system to denote the difficulty level of questions I missed. However, I might use their approach and simplify it a bit for my own use. In either case, for the price, it's a good source of practice questions and tips. If you've already reviewed concepts from each subject and are ready to try additional practice questions, take a look at this book. I would consider it a solid resource.

I purchased this book with the hopes of polishing my exam taking techniques after ensuring that I had a firm grasp of the material covered on the MCAT. I had two major issues with this book:First, I found that the practice questions and exams involving calculations were too precise. Questions found in the book relied on the use of calculators, which are not allowed on the exam. The questions were not asking about the relationship of variables on the exam, but instead would ask for certain values with high precision, not allowing for mental math.Another issue I had with this exam was that the advanced strategies offered for the verbal reasoning section are gimmicky and will only waste your time. I would not suggest trusting this book's strategies for the verbal reasoning section of the exam. If you really want to hone your strategies on the Verbal Reasoning section, turn to Exam Krackers. The practice questions were also dissimilar to the stems used on the actual AAMC verbal reasoning, making for less than effective practice questions.I purchased this book knowing that it was going to ask questions that were harder than ones found on an actual AAMC practice exam. I was disappointed with this book because Princeton Review's way of making the questions harder was to use questions that are beyond the scope of the MCAT and make for less effective study material.

Content was nice at the begging but actual test have many major typos which make it difficult to take tests since sometimes answer choices are exactly the same. Furthermore, the online material sucks. I took a practice test about 5 hrs and then it decided that I couldn't save it and the only option was for the company to reset it so that I had to take it again. The support was super cheapo too. They had to ask me for my password to verify that the test was frozen! SERIOUSLY this is embarrassing Princeton.

The verbal in this book seemed esxceptionally challenging, which made the real thing much easier to get through! The other sections were good also, mainly for practicing questions. I did well on my MCAT so I can say this book helped.
