My daughter checked this book out at the library, and LOVED it!! She's read other sleepover books, but none were as good as this one. She really recommends it!! We plan on purchasing our own copy.

We got the book when we were supposed to. The book has some good ideas in it. My daughter has enjoyed it, She is 10 years old.

I have had a copy of this book in my elementary school library for several years and it's always been very popular with the girls. The library copy was lost this year and, luckily, I was able to replace it through Amazon.

I love remember buying this book when I was in middle school at the scholastic school fairs and I was OBSESSED with this book ! If My mom didn't give it away I would still keep it until today

I bought this book for my daughter, about to celebrate her 10th birthday. I think we will need to have several birthday sleepover bashes, as there are way too many great ideas in this book for her to choose enough for only one night! Really creative invitations, inexpensive crafts, age appropriate food preparation, laugh giggle and squeal games, with clear instructions for the 8-12 age group. Great for this age, where she really wants to be involved in the planning. I don't know if the girls will get any sleep, but it looks like we're going to have a terrific party. Or two. Or more?

This book is full of great ideas for a sleepover. My daughter and friends had a wonderful time with this book. I would recommend this to anyone thinking of having a sleepover!!

I'm a grandmother, 71 years old, and a patriot. I remember details on my parents talking about WWII. This is so different now. As we are seeing through ISIS, Paris murders, beheadings...we are in a religious war people. Now Marcus is a young man who can put you in the streets, in the barracks and on their missions, so you know what it is like..you as an American owe this young man who represents all his dead or alive brothers in combat , to read this book!! Plus I hope I'm gone when we see this country going to murders in the streets, etc. Beware..

I first read "Lone Survivor" right after it came out and reread it twice since then. I've also read "SEAL of Honor" about Lt. Murphy (not by Marcus Luttrell). When this book came out I had to see what Luttrell had to share about his experience after Operation Red Wings (or Redwing... never did figure out which is correct).I've given this book five stars because it is excellent reading for anyone interested in this topic. He tells us a lot about the participation of other services in the Middle East conflicts and praises the efforts of those other service members. Sometimes it seems there is no one assigned to that area who isn't outstanding in his opinion. Still, respect for the efforts of others is not a bad thing and his constant high praise it the worse thing I can say about this book. I'm sure there are those to be criticized but he keeps that out of this book and that to his credit and shows his professionalism.As a twenty-two year veteran of the Navy I very much enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in

I picked up this book simply because I finished Lone Survivor wanting to know more. I was not disappointed. The last 1/3 of the book is devoted to filling in the details of the massive operation and all the people who worked to rescue Luttrell. Including the story of Muhammad Gulab after Redwings; what happened as a result of helping and his visit to the USA. This part of the book alone is worth it to round out the story of Lone Survivor. However, the treatment he gives of SEAL operations in Iraq should be told. He tells not just of the hard work and risk of the SEALS to take back their assigned area of Iraq back from terrorists, but the contributions of the other branches he served along side - including local Iraqis. This is the story of Iraq that we did not get in the media. If you want to know more about operations in Iraq, details of the rescue operation, or Muhammad Gulab then get this book.

I read this after reading Lone Survivor. One cannot fully understand the meaning of The Brotherhood. However after reading this you will certainly have an appreciation for it, how deep and all encompassing it is. How men with such skill, integrity and honor will always be at the ready for each and every one of his brother's and their families.Life after service is a difficult transition and Marcus addresses this with acute clarity that really drives home what that transition encompasses.He brings you with him after his survival from the hell on the mountain. You learn about the pivotal role US forces had in turning the tides of a city and way of thinking from that of hatred for our presence there to that of understanding and teamwork by the local citizens to free themselves from the terror and oppression by the enemy.VERY well written and I feel honored that Marcus has chosen to share his experiences with everyone.I recommend this book to anyone who has or is serving, has family in the Armed Forces and to every American.

A weak follow up in the series. One of the strengths of the first edition was that it showed children from all over the world, some of whom live in comparative poverty. Yet this fact was not mentioned overtly, but could easily be inferred from the pictures of their living arrangements. I understand there are politics at work here --- and nobody wants to reinforce stereotypes about regions or countries being perpetually impoverished -- but the children in this new edition all seem to be part of highly educated, relatively similar income families. There are some exceptions, of course, but much less diversity than in the first edition.One more thing -- there's less text and information about the families and their culture. Overall this edition is not as informative as the first edition.

I love this book. While it is targeted at the 7 to 10 age range, I used it to introduce my four-year-old grandson to the concept of different cultures. He loves looking at the different children in the book, seeing how they write their names (something he is learning to do), seeing interests that he shares (music, soccer) and noting differences. For his pre-K class he had to do a poster about his parents' cultures and this was the perfect introduction to get him exciting about and interested in that project.

My daughter loves this book! The pictures are beautiful and each page has interesting information about that country with relatable details that help you see how much we have in common with people around the world. I appreciate that they show a variety of family structures. Most families shown have two parents and two kids, but there are some examples of families with one child or many children and some families with a single parent.

My 7 year old daughter absolutely LOVES this book - she sits to read it and look through every single day! We have the updated version (apparently updated by over 20 years) and she loves to see their signatures, how they say hello, what their families, homes and schools look like. Even for kids too young to read just yet, it's great to look through (and teach a little diversity!). Already bought a second copy to gift to my 6 year old niece.

I love that it shows zoomed in details of individual REAL kids. This book does a great job of showing that everyone has their own unique culture (eg: people say "hello" differently, and that kid's favorite food is something I've never heard of...), but also, they're relatable! ("That kid likes legos, just like me! That girl wants to be a scientist! Me, too!")

This book is a great way to teach children about families from around the world. We used this book and the other edition as part of our Social Studies and Geography Unit.

I adore this book! There are so many fascinating details to be learned about the lives of people in different places; their foods, their favorite things, and the family dynamics are all things that will be interesting for other kids to read about.

How I wish every child in the world will have a chance to read this book........ my son is only 17-months old but he likes to browse the Pages of the book, point at the pictures and Show interest.. the last thing he does at night and the first thing he does upon waking up: browse this book and ask me to read it to him.

Apply the modified universal principle to life today.(The process summary is drawn from Tidball, The Message of Leviticus, 29).Bauckham exhibits the outcome of this system in meditations on, Leviticus 19, Proverbs 31:1-9, Psalm 10 and 126, Jesus on taxes (Matt. 17, Mark 11-12), Exodus Revelation 18, the Book of Esther, and the Genesis Flood."The risen Jesus is our future. He beckons us forward to the goal of creation and gives all Christian activity the character of hopeful movement into the future which God has promised. Not that we ourselves can achieve that future. Resurrection makes that clear: we who ourselves end in death cannot achieve the new creation out of death. The Kingdom in its final glory lies beyond the reach of our history, in the hand of the God who interrupted our history by raising Jesus from death. This transcendence of the Kingdom beyond our achievement must be remembered. But in Jesus God has given us the Kingdom not only as hope for the final future but also to anticipate in the present. As the vision of God's perfect will for his creation it is the inspiration of all Christian efforts to change the world for the better. In relation to our political activity, it is a double-edged sword, cutting through both our pretensions and our excuses. On the one hand, as the goal we do not reach, it passes judgment on all our political projects and achievements, forbids us the dangerous utopian illusions of having paradise within our grasp, keeps us human, realistic, humble and dissatisfied. On the other hand, as the goal we anticipate, it lures us on beyond all our political achievements, forbids us disillusioned resignation to the status quo, keeps us dissatisfied, hopeful, imaginative, and open to new possibilities" (150).Benefits: Politics is a subcategory of the wider study of ethics, and thus Bauckham's work is useful for all of ethics. He engagingly challenges his readers to read the Bible carefully, think rigorously, and apply the Bible wisely to politics, for the purpose of worshiping God. I know of no better example of how to do this well.Determents: Interpreting the Bible is dependent on the hermeneutical process and the belief policies of the reader. For example, the reader who comes to the text rejecting the possibility of divine revelation will make little effort to harmonize the different human authors' perspectives or grant the Bible any authority outside of its agreement with "nature."In the case of Bauckham, he has a high view of man's sin against man, but a low view of man's rebellion against God. He has a lowish view of Scripture, which we might summarize with "inspired, but. . .", and he's got an egalitarian streak. Because ethics is the application of God's Word to man, Bauckham's anthropology and his understanding of God (theology proper) influences his interpretation and application of the text.Here's a example where his theological presuppositions are exposed: "On the contrary, [Jesus'] loving concern reached all the people around him as he hung dying, his fellow victims on the crosses beside him, his mother in her grief, even his executioners, for whom he prayed forgiveness" (148).The problem with this statement is the criminals on the crosses with Christ were not victims (cf. Luke 23:40-41) in the same sense that Christ was. The thief that was saved admitted both his guilt and the justice of the sentence. Bauckham's first premises of interpretation require a degree of egalitarianism that is rejected by the Bible. And a consistent application of Jesus' identifying "himself unequivocally and finally with the victims" (148) will lead to unmitigated theological and political disaster.Yet, I highly recommend this book because Bauckham's egalitarian and anthropocentric tendencies are often corrected by how carefully and intelligently he handles the text and an apparent love for Christ and humanity. When the text overrules his bad theology, he's brilliant and incredibly edifying, but he can mislead the perplexed by promoting anthropocentric and egalitarian applications and theology.

Richard Bauckham (born 1946) is currently a Senior Scholar at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. He wrote in the Introduction to this 1989 book, "The aim of this book is to help the reader towards an understanding of the political relevance of the Bible which will be both more disciplined and more imaginative than some current attempts to read the Bible politically. It offers neither a summary of the political teaching of the Bible nor a programme for Christian political action, but a prerequisite for those things: a course in political hermeneutics. In other words... it is for those who want to know HOW to interpret the Bible politically."He asserts, "the Bible's political teaching is in some degree CONDITIONED by the social and political context in which it arose. But it seems to me we must recognize this as part of the real humanity of Scripture." (Pg. 13) He argues, "Leviticus 19:9-10 is a CULTURALLY SPECIFIC law. It was an effective means of provision for the poor in the economic circumstances of ancient Israel, but would not be ... where... most people are not farmers, and... the majority of the poor, who live in the inner cities, will not be much helped by the food they could gather on country rambles." (Pg. 27)He observes, "Jesus' solidarity with the helpless reminds us of the limitations of politics, important though politics is." (Pg. 52) Later, he adds, "Thus Jesus' objection is to THEOCRATIC taxation, taxing God's people in God's name, because it is inconsistent with the way Jesus understands the rule of God." (Pg. 75)This book has some thought-provoking observations on Christianity and politics, and may be of interest to persons studying such matters.
