The colorful front page makes up for all the low quality picture, which by the way are ALL in black and white. It looks like something printed out by a middle schooler for a health class project. Don’t be fooled by the bright colored cover!!!This book sucks.

This is a great resource book to walk you through the steps to create a great story. This needs to be read over and over again. Thanks to Brandon Sanderson for recommending this book. Grab a copy and read it and read it again. Everything from world building to magic systems and how to decide what form a space travel your worlds use. Is it Hyperspace? or is it Jump gates? How and whys of which one to use, and what the cost of magic is.

Fantastic advice and great insights into not only writing overall but specifically the challenges of Speculative Fiction. Probably the most helpful advice in the book was "end the story you started". Understanding the different story types and structures for each was key in figuring out what I have found troubling in so many books. I could never put my finger on exactly what bugged me, but seeing that so many authors start one type of story and finish a different one brought into crystal clarity a key differentiator between professional authors and would-be writers.I expect the wisdom in this book will have a profound effect on making my own writing much stronger.

Orson Scott Card's How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy (HTWSF&F) is short and not very helpful. Of the 138 pages I would say that it had about 10 pages of useful information and that is being generous.I have really enjoyed his other books, Ender's Game, Speaker of the Dead and others, so I was disappointed with this effort and really expected a lot more.The title sells that it is going to teach the beginning writer "How to write SF & F." I don't see how this claim can be made. Of course, in the introduction, there is a disclaimer that the book will not cover writing in general but only details specific to SF & F.There is some relevant information, but it is brief and covers things such as long distance space travel, time travel, magic, back story, languages, and the MICE quotient, which all stories have a bit of - milieu, idea, character, event. All of this is presented in lists of short paragraphs. Not all that helpful.

This is an awesome little book that delves into the basics of writing speculative fiction from world building to publishing to dealing with family members who don't understand your need to write. I read one Amazon reviewer who didn't care for this book because everything in it is intuitive. Yes, most of what's in here makes perfect sense in a "Well, duh!" kind of way, but sometimes intuitive things need to be spelled out clearly. You may kind of know something at the back of your brain, but unless you can bring it to the front of your mind, it's not going to work for you. This book brings these things to the front of your mind, simply, clearly, and effectively.For example, Mr. Card writes that you should know why things are the way they are in your world. (Well duh, right?) Of course you should know why things work the way they do in your world, whether it's how spaceships manage to travel faster than light, or what the price of magic is. But the important thing is to know how all this stuff works before you really start, as opposed to making it up as you go. If you know what the rules are, then you can make your world believable. (Also, you don't have to keep going back and forth trying to find what you wrote before so that you don't contradict yourself.) What your characters do within those rules can happen spur of the moment, but the world they live in must be pretty well defined in your own mind before they start living there.The last section (The Life and Business of Writing) was the least intuitive of all, but so necessary. Getting published doens't mean quitting your day job (OK, that part was intuitive). Some of what he says is almost disheartening, but my feeling is, being prepared is better than being surprised. Knowing about the pitfalls can help you avoid them.I could go on and on about how helpful this book is, but I have a future bestseller calling to me, demanding that I plug a few holes and flesh out some of those pesky middle parts. So get this book if you like to write sci-fi or fantasy and your intuition is being a bit non-specific. It's good, plain and simple.

While I find this book to be very helpful in structuring science fiction stories, I have to agree with the two individuals who complained about the examples given in the chapter on sex scenes. I found the examples to be poorly written. They were replete with awkward, incomplete sentences while being scant on sexual imagery. I must say that I was surprised by this initially, but when I read what Mr. Gerrold had to say about writing sex scenes, it made sense to me. He starts this particular chapter by saying that sex scenes are embarrassing to write, to read and to publish. There is no way that a writer can ever create a strong sex scene with such a poor attitude. Why even attempt them?

This must be the kindest, funniest, most no-nonsense book on craft I've ever read, and I've read a lot of good ones. It's honest and thoughtful, and promises no quick fixes while delivering a massive dose of can-do.

A good introduction to the world of writing science fiction by one of the world's premier science fiction writers. I learned several useful tidbits that I will carry with me for the rest of my time as a writer. Read it and you will find some as well.I rated this four stars only because there are other, better, writing self-help books out there, like Techniques of a Selling Writer by Dwight V Swain.This is a good supplement to any writer's craft.

This book started out so promising. I loved the wicked humor present in their letter exchanges. However, as I read more, the tone of the book changed entirely and unbelievably. My pet peeves:1. The action of the book takes place over just a couple of days (!)2. The heroine goes from timid mouse to roaring feminist during this same short period.3. The hero goes from distant, mysterious rogue to blubbering idiot also during this short period.4. The internal monologes of both characters became repetative and distracting (maybe to add filler to the lack of plot/)I wish the author had stayed with the orginal tone of the book--humorous, witty, exsasperating (like some of Tessa Dare's books).

A dark, sexy and troubled Duke meets a sharp , kind and lovely lady . The plot is of course a formula historical romance readers are used to, but not all characterizations are well done. In this case and in the previous book in the series , Lenora Bell promises to give us the escape we need without overwriting the players. She will join the list of authors that I will go to when I need this kind of diversion .

This book features two strong characters. A Duke, who has a secret identity as the Hellhound, he prowls the streets of London threatening gamblers and saving young peers from gambling away their fortunes. He comes face to face with a strong, independent young spinster-in-training. These two both know what they want and fight to get it. This book is a lot of fun. If the reader is looking for period correct behavior on the part of the characters this is not the book for them. The author acknowledged some of the restrictions that the upper classes face during that time and then proceeds to have her characters break every rule with no consequences. This however is a historical ROMANCE not a literary novel and so I think that allows some leeway. I liked the characters, both primary and secondary, and enjoyed the situations that they got themselves into. I read the book before this one (not necessary to follow what is happening in this novel) and liked seeing what has happened in the lives of the characters that I was introduced to before. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it for persons that like historical romances with a little humor.

I normally read a book once, but I made an exception with this particular book! I loved the story line and the independence that Thea(h) showed. Thea is a strong female, showing compassion and a wonderful wit. If you enjoy a book with a female that bucks the conventions of society and has humor throughout you should read this book. If you like a story that has passion and is difficult to put down, you should read this book! This is the second book in The Disgraceful Dukes, but can be read as a stand alone. I went back and read the first book and am anxiously awaiting the third in this series.

Predictable, with an extremely simple and very silly heroine. Predictable because the chunks of the story match other implausible stories already published in other works. Secret hero? Dead/not dead brother? Poor little perfect girl with mean, manipulative relatives? All there.

This felt like the author was trying to stuff too many plot devices into one book. There was the hero's brother's death, the mysterious paintings, the heros's mother's emotional problems, the heroine's overbearing family, and a road trip!The middle of the book really dragged, and it was hard to keep going. Then there was a twist that certainly recaptured my attention, but felt silly.

this book did not disappoint, as i enjoyed the personal, emotional journey of Dalton and Thea. For that era, what Thea was trying to break away from is brave of her. And Dalton, one admires his need to have a closure regarding his brother. But i felt that after all the good built-up, it kind of fizzled just before the tail-end, instead of a crescendo. Maybe i was expecting too much due to previous books. Still, i enjoyed it.

Being demensional people we are never satisfied with flat surfaces. Ms Collis gives us an alternative way to create demension and use our God given talent to create beyond the norm.

I took Ruth's Udemy course "How To Paint a 3D Sculptural Rose" and was won over by how warm and inviting she was as she explained all of the steps one would take to create a 3D sculptural rose and, therefore, how to get started with your own sculptural painting. This book is a perfect follow-up to that course but also stands on its own as an even more detailed exploration of this exciting painting technique.The text is clear and easy to follow and the pictures really help the reader understand the steps and what to expect. Ruth also gives the reader lots of ideas for what other things are possible, beyond impasto rosettes. So, have fun with the techniques carefully and loving outlined in Ruth's guide (or through her course).I should point out that I am not a painter per se, I used to do some painting when I was younger but haven't touched a canvas or paints in quite some time. This is another wonderful book by Ron Schwab! I love Westerns, and I loved this story! We begin by a crazy cat lady having her lawyer take a look at a dead body being devoured by pigs in her pig pen - and expecting Ian Locke to deal with it! And that's all I am going to say about the story... you need to read it for yourself!The reasons this book is a great read are many! The story unfolds like an old-timer telling it, though the narrative shifts from Ian's point of view to the third person. We find out things as Ian Locke does. Once the action and discoveries begin, it speeds up to where you cannot put the book down. I was so needing to know what happened next! There are many very well-developed and solid characters: some we love, some we hate, and some you might like to see them get their butts kicked! :) The portrayal of the life, society, landscape, etc... all take us back and we feel as if we are there. The plot twists and turns; you can't tell what is coming up next. Too, there is humor! In short, it has all the elements I need to call it a great read!Once you read this, you will want to read more of Mr Schwab's stories! I have all his stories thus far. I read them when I need an escape back to simpler times... This is a story you will love - read it!

I had read one of Ron Schwab's other books, Night of the Coyote, and was hoping for an equally good read with Last Will. I was not disappointed! While the setting and characters are quite different, the suspense, mystery, historical authenticity and light touch are still there. It has a great opening scene, and my heart was racing through the action of some of the ending chapters. Definitely a 5-star read!

Not your run-of-the-mill western tale. This one has murder, investigation, lawyers, courtroom details, and a justice-seeking man who stops at nothing to defend his daughter from the harm of a pervert. These are things not often seen in other Western books. Some subplots make it even more interesting. The characters are well-defined and the story plays out quick enough to keep the pages turning. A believable story. I'll be reading more books from this author.

This book should have been called “At Last It Won’t”. In all fairness if you like Chick Flicks, this might have been a book for you. I found it to be light reading and leaning toward feminine with not much direction. At this point let me state that I made it as far as page 59 and finally quit. I’m a slow reader so if a book doesn’t grab my interests by then, I’m not going to waste more time on it. I see that the Amazon ratings were very good and it makes me wonder. I guess it just shows you, “Different strokes for different folks”. For my tastes it was a dud. This book was about too many women and went nowhere with the story line so I’m giving it two stars, only because I've encountered worse. Sorry I wasted my time on this one though.

I definitely recommend the book. It was my first of Ron's books, I have now read two. I will buy them all and continue as he writes them. I am a Louis L'amour reader, I think Ron is close. A page turner for me! You will like the book! I have read many books written by and of attorneys, all have been present day. It is neat to read of frontier lawyers.

I decided to read this story for two reason. One it’s a mystery and two because of the time it was set in Nebraska. My great grandmother came to east Nebraska in the late 1870’s as a young girl and spent her life in a small town of Plainview Nebraska. So that was a good reason to read this story. I’m so glad I did, because it was exceptionally good. I really liked the characters and though I rarely enjoy a story for the romance, this one I did. Plan on reading more from Ron Schwab.

Is the only good Indian really a dead Indian? Is the soiled dove a fallen woman or a woman fallen on hard times? This series is about a profession rarely seen in westerns where the gun and the rope were often the only law. As such it is both a legal drama and a detective mystery. It's rather unique and a good read. I like all of this author's books I have read.

Had my doubts in the first chapter, but my doubts disappeared as the characters were fleshed out. I became more and more intrigued. A few twists. Very good writing.Thanks for the read!

I bought this book after hearing Peter Allison on the radio doing a promo of the book. I was enthralled by the interview. Peter Allison spoke with humour & candour telling of life in the jungle, his travels and most importantly, of walking a Puma. I thought "I must have this book" and I was so happy I bought it. Allison documents his travels in a way that is grass-roots, telling of all things that can & do go wrong, the unexpected, the annoying, (especially when you are Un-co and have a knack for getting into a bind). In this book, basically a diary of Allison's adventures & travels through South America, we are introduced to Roy, the orpahaned Puma, being cared for at a sanctaury, by volunteers who come and go. Now it's Allison's turn to "Walk a Puma". The writing is hilarious & at times sad. I'd say it is an Eye Opener. We in the cities have little idea how the rest of the world live and survive. This book is different, in a good way. Read it and just be entertained. I would like to know what has become of Roy since?

Peter Allison is a fun read. I devoured his books on Africa, often laughing out loud at his self-deprecation, humor and the wonderful absurdities he seems to walk into, eyes- wide. How to Walk A Puma is no less interesting but it is about South America which, no slur intended, does not charm me as Africa does. For those who are interested in his travels there (or simply enjoy spending time with a very down to earth nature/animal loving everyman) this book will be a pleasure. As always, I learned a lot. (Like army ants are scary as hell and, what true wanderlust looks and sounds like) I hope Peter keeps writing. He'll probably end up in an old folk's home in Timbucktu and his adventures via a wheelchair will continue to crack me up.

While I hope this is not his last book, as of right now it is. It is hard to read something like this book and not wish you were there as well. For those of us that can't explore our world for what ever reason Peter has given us a little touch of what it is like to be able to see and interact with these extraordinary places. All I can say is that I hope Peter will finally find his jaguar some day.

Peter Allison has a delightful sense of humor, and I had to struggle not to laugh aloud in public a few times when I was reading How to Walk a Puma. It's a fun read between using a puking cat as a pick up line, dodging puma attacks, and surviving earthquakes and crazy drivers, there is a lot to enjoy. At some point I became a bit annoyed at someone having the time to spend a year and a half just doing whatever came to his mind, but that was probably more jealousy on my part than bad writing on his!

Second book of Peter's I've read, very funny writing style, and equally funny circumstances he seems to get himself into. (You think walking a puma is an exaggeration??)Laugh out loud moments, interesting characters, this book has a lot to offer.C'mon Peter, write some more books!

As the third book, I found it interesting still but not as entertaining and funny as the first two. That said, the last few chapters are by far the best as the chapters in the middle do not say much. Overall a decent read.

Wonderful book...has it all; humor, information, drama, human interest

This is a fantastic book for animal and adventure lovers. I would give it six or seven or ten stars if they were available. It is well written, really fun to read with an amazing sense of humor to keep you turning the pages. Peter Allison has another of these books, "Don't Look Behind You" as well and both are fantastic so order them together. You will be absolutely delighted. I promise!
