This book is a must buy for all those inspiring game makers out there. I really got my money’s worth out of it. The book covers all the skills needed to create a full game from start to finish and gives example and code throughout. Unlike what the title says, it took me longer than a weekend to finish. I do not mind the extra time as I feel it added value to the book. The most time consuming part of the project for me was the making the different maps. The book offers the ability to download the maps from their website, but I wanted to make them myself. Again, this added to my enjoyment of the book. A negative about the maps in the book is that they are small and in black and white. For most thing, B&W is okay, but for the maps, they should have been larger and in color. I had to resort to looking on the internet for the map images. I found them, and although they were also small, they were in color and that helped.The book takes you through the development of the game by making two towns. The starting town and a hidden town the players find via a quest of sorts. There are 6 levels to the dungeon crawler presented in the book. The book teaches you how to make new characters, items, weapons, and even spells. The book not only tells you how to do it, it offers minor suggestions on how you could improve on what is in the book.The main game from the book is built solely from what is available in the basic game. There is a chapter at the end of the book that talks about how to improve the game with add-in scripts and other neat ideas, if you so desire.Overall I like this book a lot and recommend you pick it up if you enjoy making games and you want to know how to use the tools available with RPG Maker MV.

I almost didn't buy this book because of some of the negative reviews, I would have missed out on an excellent teaching tool. I have zero exp with rpg maker mv BUT I had an idea about the rpg I wanted to make and how I wanted it to work. I read the book cover to cover in a few hours and while reading it I had my own game in mind. I watched the author work through things I wanted to do. I am going to start building my game and will be leaning heavily on this book for reference as I still technically have no exp.

Its an easy to follow guide that get you started very quickly. Before you know it your already off track and creating things all on your own.

I got this book as part of the Humble Code Your Own Games bundle, and, man, I am glad I only paid $1 for it. RPG Maker MV can be more than a little obtuse and difficult to follow, but I'm sad to say this book only makes it worse.First and foremost, it seems like the book's editor was asleep on the job, because the book is absolutely packed full of digressions, half-formed thoughts, and constant references to RPG Maker VX Ace, the previous version of the software that has no bearing on the 'tutorials' at hand. This would be bad enough in any non-fiction book, but it's especially frustrating for a book that is supposed to be teaching you how to use a piece of software. Clarity should be the primary goal of anything designed as a tutorial, and this book has absolutely none of that.It is almost like the book is a direct transcription of what the author was saying as they messed around with the software, no editing, no revising for clarity, nothing.Every 'lesson' in the book goes like this: the author vaguely describes how to do something (usually with a reference to how RPG Maker VX Ace was better or different) without any explanation for why you should be doing it or what you're actually making. He then says "then do it some more for the other things like this" and then we're back onto another digression.I'll share with you the line that broke me and made me decide going further with this book was not worth my time. I should point out this was on page 12:"Anyway, let’s get back to working on our transfer events. I believe we were about to make the exterior transfer event. This time, let’s use one of my favorite transfer event trimming devices: the Parallel trigger."It's like having an absentminded professor fumble his way through a half-remembered lesson he taught twenty years ago. I should point out that at this point in the 'tutorial' I had literally just been introduced to Transfer Events and didn't have any real comprehension on what they were used for...now the author is sharing his own work-around to mess with the program's built-in event handling process.It's a shame that there are not many good tutorial resources for RPG Maker MV, as it seems like a nice, powerful program for making RPGs. It's also a shame that Apress would have the gall to publish this incomprehensible mess of a book.

Good introduction to data analysis.The clear syntax grammar of Python helps a lot to clarify the meaning of author.

In my view, too many people want to be data scientist and use advance statistical techniques that they don't fully understand. I believe Grus closes this gap with this fun introductory book to some of the basic techniques in data analysis. If you don't come from a statistical background (MS/PhD), then you should start with this book and move on to other texts such as Pattern Recognition and Neural Networks by Brian D. Ripley for a thorough review of classification methods, or the more popular and modern The Elements of Statistical Learning By Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, one of my favorite books ever on programming. It does three things superbly: covers the basic low level tools of a data scientist (the "from scratch" part), gives a great overview of useful Python programming examples for those new to Python, and gives an amazingly succinct yet high level overview of the mathematics and statistics required for data science.At first I was very worried about this book based on the first few chapters for the one reason that the author was cracking jokes throughout the text and I thought if it kept up for the rest of the book I was going to be very upset. But it did not happen and it turns out to have been a very reasonable way to ease into this complicated subject.The author steps through the toolbox of the data scientist, chapter by chapter, giving useful, insightful, clear pieces of code and textual explanations of each topic. So, for those new to data science it gives just enough to get the basic idea of a concept in terms of code and mathematical explanation, and then moves on to the next topic.It is often said that in writing, less is better and this book gets things down to their essence. That is one of the great things about the book - that the length of each chapter is about 20 pages (over 25 chapters). So each chapter can be read and the code even exercised in about an hour. Further, the references at the end of each chapter invite the reader to expanded information at the level of one or more entire textbooks or references. Thus the book can be seen as kind of boiling down a 25-volume set of highly technical subject matter into roughly 300 pages.The topics that were explored the best seem to be the ones on probability, working with data, regression, clustering, and databases (SQL). Some of the small but dense code samples were tough to follow but that is based on their algorithmic complexity - such as that for logistical regression and MapReduce. Occasionally the author uses a term that is not defined or in the index (such as data munging - which I still haven't looked up to see what it means). There are only a small number of typos which indicates good editing. While the Python crash course was pretty good, Python is a vast language and there could have been more to that section.I read this book from cover to cover and stepped through logically all the code (but did not actually run any of it) and I would wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone wanting to work in the area of data science or its related fields, such as big data engineering or data analysis.

Started programming Python immediately with this book. Lots of concepts for one book. I like that that there are enough details to write a functional program for each chapter and not too many details. It's important to find a proper material to start, and this book, in my opinion, does it perfectly.

This is a great book-- well written, easy to digest and informative. I've been in Data Mining and Statistical Analysis for a little over a decade now; I was looking for a book to share with my team to ensure we were all up-to-speed on some foundational concepts: this book is it. EDIT: I also forgot to mention, it has probably the best get-up-and-running in Python introduction I've seen (see, e.g., Chapter 2, ~20pp.)It's the right size and correct coverage for the content and the author's sense of humor (indeed, that of a data scientist) resonates with the audience.Solid introduction, even better review or brief explanation of commonly encountered topics.One of the best O'Reilly books I've read in a long time-- in fact, a technical book at the level I used to expect from O'Reilly.

Minus one star for using outdated Python 2.7. Essentially ALL data science tools you are likely to run across have been updated to Python 3.4+. I would have knocked off two stars but this book is actually quite good and delivers on its title.This is a very basic book on Data Science but it gives a broad overview which helps you get a perspective on the tools that are available. This book teaches methods by developing actual code for these methods. You will find in work situations that you will use library functions instead of "rolling your own" but this book helps bring the details together by having you actually code these techniques. I support this approach 100% Once you have this overview, you can drill down into specifics with other materials like textbooks or cookbooks.I'd did flinch at some of the explanations in this book but it really is a "from Scratch" approach and some things are simplified to avoid distractions.This book also teaches basic Python 2.7 with a quick start chapter, so it is self contained for any scientist or engineer that wants to get started adding Data Science techniques to their repertoire.

You will construct functions that calculate the variance, standard deviation etc. up to constructing more advanced machine learning functions, from scratch.What is pretty underrated about this book is the very clever/clean (and challenging) way of constructing code and solving problems. Things can get very ....nested. Very valuable resource that I come back to again and again.

This book had a tremendous amount of great ideas to use in my scrapbooking collection. Thank you for such a wide variety of examples.

I was very excited to receive this book. After looking from cover to cover I was hoping that their would be one idea that I would like. I realized that this book is very dated in the style of scrapping. I think that their are other books that would have been a much better choice. However for the money I suppose I got what I paid for.

I love this book. I have just about every scrapbook ideabook out there by Creating Keepsakes, Paper Crafts, & Memory Makers. This one is a major favorite of mine. It's broken into wonderfully unique sections new inspiration to "think out of the box" while designing my scrapbook layout. The layouts are great, and just the right complexity so some normal jane scrapbooker like me can do them and has the embellishments needed without fancy techniques.Also recommended: PET PAGES UNLEASHED by Memory Makers!!!!!

Has some good ideas but I think it would be better for beginner scrapbookers. There really weren't any ideas that I hadn't seen elsewhere. I'd have to say it's not for a very experienced hobbyist. Still, for what I paid for it, it's worth it..lol.

After reading the reviews I was really excited about receiving this book. Well when it came and I looked at it page to page thoroughly I was very disappointed and sorry I had wasted the money on it. There are many other books out there that are alot better. May be alright for a beginner but for an experience scrapbooker no.

Great reference book -- almost a sequel to "Looking For Dilmun". I would have rated five stars except for the cost of the book.

In my studies of Mesopotamia, I had never really known much about Dilmun and Magan, places which are mentioned in several Mesdopotamian texts. My choice was between Geoffrey Bibby's book on Dilmun published in 1972, and this book which was published in 1998. Having read Professor Crawford's book `Sumer and the Sumerians' I finally decided on her book primarily because it was more recent.The book, which focuses on the period 5000-1700BC, is a detailed survey of the findings from about 125 archaeological sites on the Arabian side of the Persian Gulf from the island of Falaika at the head of the Gulf, the `Eastern Province' of Arabia including Tarut Island and the Bahrain Islands, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates to the Musandum at the Straits of Hormuz, the interior sites of Oman and the coastal sites along the east side of that peninsula down to the most easterly point of the Arabian Peninsula at Ras al Junayz.Chapter 1: The Setting, describes the physical setting of the area, and provides the rationale for identifying Dilmun with the Eastern Province and the islands of Bahrain, while noting that references to Dilmun in the Mesopotamian texts may have referred to different parts of this area at different times The copper rich sites in Oman is the reason for identifying it with Magan whose copper mines were of considerable importance to the Sumerian and Akkadian dynasties.Chapter 2: The Earliest Settlements, covers the archaeological sites for the earliest period period of human settlement in the Eastern Province and Bahrain from about 5000BC to 3000BC which is the time of the Ubaid, Uruk, and Jemdat Nasr periods in Mesopotamia. Current archaeological evidence is sparse, but it seems that after the initial settlement phase during the 5th millenium, these were largely deserted during most of the 4th millenium until the Jemdat Nasr period when contacts between these areas and Mesopotamia revive.Chapter 3: The Development of Dilmun, covers the archaological sites and textual evidence of the 3rd millenium. There is little evidence of settlement in the Eastern Province and Bahrain until about 2500BC, when the first urban settlement developed on Tarut Island where workshops for pottery manufacture, and other material such as lapis lazuli, copper, and steatite have been excavated. On Bahrain Island itself, the vast area of ancient burial mounds at Saar date from around 2500BC and were built and often reused over a period of about 2000 years lasting into the Hellenistic age. Professor Crawford points out that over the past 30 years surveys and excavation of newly identified towns and villages show that enough local people lived on the island to fill the graves, arguing against the hypothesis that Bahrain was a necropolis for Mesopotamian royalty and aristocracy.Chapters 4 and 5 cover the period 2000-1750BC when there was a dramatic expansion of settlement on Bahrain This is the so-called period of `Early Dilmun', when it appears that Bahrain traders acted as the middlemen between the states of lower Mesopotamia and the mining businesses of the Oman Peninsula. The evidence for settlement, the architecture of domestic, workshop, and temple buildings, graves, and artefacts is described in considerable detail.Chapters 6 and 7 cover the same things for the Oman Peninsula, where direct contact with Mesopotamia seems to have been replaced by contacts with cities in Central Asia and with the Harappan cities on the Indus River.Chapter 8 provides an overview of the Development and Decline of Dilmun.This is a thorough and up to date study of the findings from the archaeological sites along the south side of the Arabian (Persian) Gulf and the Oman Peninsula. Of the 250+ references in the bibliography, fully two thirds were published in the 15 years immediately prior to the publication of this book in 1998. The descriptions of the architecture of buildings and tombs is well supported by photographs and illustrations, and the differences and similarity in styles between the two areas is also very clear. There are several maps showing the general area of most settlements, but only about half of the named sites are shown on any map. I eventually found a more detailed map of Oman and the UAE on the web, but still had to resort to Internet searches for information on those sites which I couldn't find on this map. Even so, this left about a dozen which were not listed in the index, and for which I have no idea as to even their general location. A small point perhaps, but I find that knowing where things are is helpful to my understanding.A similar observation can be made about dates. I recognize that it is obviously very difficult to pinpoint 3rd - 5th millenium dates with any certainty, but it would have helped if the author had included some kind of dating line even if it was broken down into every 250 years. I eventually developed one for myself but I still have some doubts about its accuracy.This is a fairly short book (the main body of the text is only 156 pages), but the level of detail is such that I found a single reading was insufficient for me to truly absorb what I was reading. As a result I had to reread it several times and make copious notes on the findings by site and time period. While this is not a criticism of the book it does mean that if you want to get the most from this book, then a quick read through is not going to do it unless you are very familiar with the latest archaelogical information.

I was cringing all the way through this book, horrified at the accidents and the run-around that the injured get in our pathetic excuse for a health care system. Mason doesn't go too much into neuroscientific details, but focuses instead on how the injury has affected the injured, their lives and livelihood, their friends and family, and how they have learned or failed to learn to live with their deficits. Each chapter is a biography. Some are hopeful, all are illuminating.I hope this book helps to raise public awareness about what a desperate state we are in with regards to being able to provide cost-effective care and therapy for people with TBI. Hundreds of brain-injured soldiers are coming back from Iraq and will need help integrating back into society.Brookhaven Hospital in Tulsa, where the author is based, offers care that is tailored to the needs of each individual. No two brain injuries are the same and no two roads to recovery take the same route. This type of treatment needs to be available at more facilities, and it needs to be available to everybody who needs it, not just the wealthy.Read it, give it to a friend, wear a helmet.

I guess it speaks more about me than the author, but I wish there was something that could walk away with some call to action about what can be done. Instead I just felt really hopeless. I guess that is often the Case with TBI, but it was a very rough read. like I said its important to understand the epidemic but none the less I wish there was some sort of positive call to action to help or prevent TBI.

As someone who has suferred rom seizures since the age of 13 I was stunned by the opening chapter regarding the snowboarder who suffered a concussion, and ever since, a lifetime of seizures. He, like so many others, did not know what EPILEPSY was or what it looked or felt like. Only after (another) public seizure and being rushed to the local emergency room and going through the littany of tests (MRI, CT etc) did a neurologist tell him what he had.It was hard to read, because I am that same person - I did not know what it was either. Only until a neighbor said the word did my Mom and Dad think to look for a neurologist. I have been on medication since 13. I am now 44 and suffer from Osteoporosis as a result of side effects of the medication. Hoever, I have no choice BUT to take them,...I am still reading the book but it is a well written very somber view of neurological trauma in the US, and you do not know just how big a problem it is until you read it.

This was an awesome book for anyone interested in brain injuries. I suffered from one myself two years ago, and was interested to hear about the experiences of other people. Mason does a great job of keeping you entertained while also helping you learn about the wide variety of symptoms people suffer from after brain injuries. I would reccomend this book to anyone, really, even people who have no connection with brain injuries themselves. Great book, five stars.

Head injuries are complex and many survivors deal with issues feeling alone and unsupported. Often, their injuries can't be seen physically on the outside. This work brings to light the many issues survivors suffer through. Healing starts with acceptance of the changes. Mason does an excellent job spotlighting different cases and individuals and the struggles they go through on a day to day basis. Many changes still need to be addressed in assisting survivors in recovery and adapting to the changes brought on by brain injury. The most important tidbit to take from this work is to protect your head at all costs. Your life really does depend on it.

The author details the stories of his subjects with stark honesty and incredible compassion and empathy. His subjects are not brain injured people but rather people with brain injuries. He feircely defends their humanity throughout while never losing his own in the process.It is unfortunately necessarily gloomy at times. This is the reality of living with the injury. Each injury is different, though, as each person is different.This book also clearly illustrates how woefully inadequate and unequal to the task modern medicine is in this regard. If people are to survive this and remain people, then we, as a society, need to step up and help them do so.

I loved this book and read it in one sitting. As the mom of a TBI victim, it was an eye opening book. I felt a little disheartened by the grim reality presented by the author (he is a little gloomy .. ) but I think the book will inspire me to continue to be "a squeaky wheel" on my daughter's behalf.I have QUITE the head injury library at this point, and many are written by survivors or family members with or without the help of a "ghost writer" and i think this leads to some pretty questionable writing and some of them are really hard to get through. HEAD CASES is extremely well written, and was pleasure to read.

Very important book. If you know anyone with a head injury you must read this. Actually.everyone should read this. With so many soldiers returning with traumatic brain injury we all need to educator ourselves, you will be surprised by how little you know.

My two year old lives roaring at this book. This is the first book he has sat all the way through then asked for more. Very cute book leaves out all the scary pieces and gives just enough info to keep them interested and us parents intrigued by the small version of the movie we all love.

I LOVE these movie Golden Books. My wife is a huge Jurassic Park fan and I bought this for her for mother's day. It was a huge success! It is a fun book that I am sure that we will cherish with our children for years to come. And when they are old enough, we will watch Jurassic Park with them :)

I preordered this book in December and honestly forgot about it. I was so excited when it showed up in the mail. The Little Golden Books were always my favorite growing up and this one is a great addition!

My 4 year old son LOVES dinosaur. I've shown him clips of the movie Jurassic Park. Anyway, he loves this book. My only complaint is that the book leaves out the sneezing brachiosaurus! It is on the cover and a funny part, especially for little boys. It did arrive in great condition.

We've only had this book for a few weeks - but my 3.5year old son has had me read it SO much that he is almost able to repeat line-by-line, the whole book! The art style is cute. My 2 year old daughter is just entering the dino stage and he has been trying to read it to her the past few days.

Love it, a kid friendly version of the story. I love being able to share my love of Jurassic Park to my 5 yr old. I wish it were a tad longer, so more of the details could be included, but it is the perfect length for bedtime stories. The illustrations are wonderful also, very colorful and have an interesting style.

Tis an amazing book. This a fun read for fans of all ages. Oh and please go watch the movies; they are scary fun as well!

My four year old brother is a big Jurassic fan and when this book showed up he got very happy. He can't put it down and wants me to read it to him most of the time. Highly recommend for all Jurassic fans (:
