Pieter Estersohn is a leading photographer of architecture and interiors. His work regularly appears in major shelter magazines, including Architectural Digest, and he has contributed to many interior design and lifestyle books, among them Charlotte Moss's Rizzoli publications. He is the author of Kentucky: Historic Houses and Horse Farms of Bluegrass Country. He is also on the boards of the Historic Red Hook Advisory Council and Cleremont Historic site, and belongs to the Edgewood Club in Tivoli, New York, founded in the 1880s by the original owners of many of the homes in Life Along the Hudson. John Winthrop "Wint" Aldrich, a Livingston descendant, resides in Rokeby, a 200-year-old stucco mansion in the Hudson River landscape district. He was the former New York State Deputy Commissioner for Historic Preservation.

Absolutely beautiful book of the elegant houses along the romantic Hudson!

A book professing to be about architecture should at least have floor plans. Just one tiny plan in this book.The book is lovely, and should stoke the egos of the owners of the houses, as they gaze upon images of their own living and dining rooms, and read about how wonderful they are.

Makes me want to own property along the Hudson.

This book is a Christmas gift and hasn't been read yet. I'm sure it's beautiful & cant wait to dive into it!

I have been looking for a book with a little bit of everything, to do with slime, in it and I like the ideas in this book, but for the price, I expected there to be more recipes in it. I chose to give it 5 stars because it was a thorough step-by-step guide.

Heartbreaking. I bought this book for Christmas for my 6-y/o, along with a huge bin filled with the ingredients needed for every slime recipe in this book. My daughter was so excited to get a huge slime-making kit, but we have tried every recipe in this book, and all but 3 failed miserably, and the 3 that worked, leave an awful film on your hands and were hard to play with. Unless you're not supposed to use Elmer's glue, this book was a waste of money and excitemnent, and was the biggest disappointment of Christmas and Christmas vacation. It's not that the book was expensive, but all the supplies and ingredients I bought to make all these recipes were!

We have had so much fun making the slime recipes in this book. My now adult kids played with oobleck when they were little so it was fun the revisit that with their children. My grand kiddos and I have made most of the recipes in the book with great success. Our favorites are the glitter slime and the sequin slime. We also loved slime with foam beads. I love that these are borax free.

My 10 yr old daughter LOVES this book! So far she has made metallic slime, fluffy slime and glow in the dark slime (so fun for sleep-overs). I think she will make every single recipe in this book!

Best slime book for kids! Great value, and tons of fun recipes and ideas. Love the step-by-step photos. They really make the process stress-free and easy for tweens and teens to make on their own!

I bought this book to include in a slime kit that I’m putting together for my 10 year old for Christmas. It’s got simple instructions and bright photos. Great little book for the price.

Let's of different and fun slime recipe my avid slime maker hasn't tried yet!

this was a terrible book! do not waste your money I thought it would be cool but it is just the same recipe over and over and the only difference is that they add one optional ingredient like glitter! also the reciples do not even work so you end up throwing away the whole project. I do NOT recommend buying it. ( I would rate this with no stars but it does not allow you to).

As an agnostic, I was surprised by the beginning of the book with what seemed to me a lot of religious talk. Shortly after, I remembered the title of the book I had just bought and decided to settle in and read it with an open mind. I couldn't put it down after another few pages and now, after recently finishing it, I I realize this is one of those books I'll be reading again and again. The spiritual (note I don't call it religious now) context is beautiful and it helps to put my finger on just what it is I love about my animals and being with them. I think it applies to many more animals than just horses, including donkeys, mules, and goats. The concrete examples of how to apply these concepts to training are invaluable and practical. I love the combination of philosophy with exercises, and really can't recommend the book more highly.

Dr. Hamilton has the distinct honor of being gifted with a brilliant mind and compassionate heart. He has used his knowledge of neuroscience, horses and zen to bring a very practical and sensible manual on horse training to the world- with both the horse and rider in mind as a symbiotic unit. Most so called natural horsemanship trainers neglect to mention the spiritual nature of the horse in conjunction with the rider and so fear to tread into the space of 'energy' or 'chi' - I imagine partly because they fear they won't be taken seriously. However, Dr. Hamilton is succinct and pragmatic in his articulation of training methods while also establishing the fact that a person's energy field, i.e. thoughts, intentions, posture, philosophy, etc. will always have an impact on the horse.Two of the major aspects that seems neglected in training are time and patience. Being with a horse requires one be acutely aware of their human tendencies to want things right away so the horse can 'do' something for them- jump, walk, turn, stop, perform, whatever the case may be as to why you wanted the horse in the first place.If you're willing to take full responsibility for yourself and your horse, in what kind of horse you helped to create or person you turn out to 'Be', then this book is for you. It is reasonable, logical, accessible, based on human kinds' highest ability to interact with nonhuman life and will help create the opening and ground necessary for you to develop yourself into the kind of horseman/woman that you can be proud of and that your horse would willingly follow- based on the inside out rather than from impersonal conditioning that has trained the horse to do something like a robot, leaving a void, obedient animal in your charge. The only aspects I disagree with is the use of bits and round pen training as I see them as unnecessary when there one can be safe and ride bitless and round pen training can be stressful.Thank you Dr. Hamilton for bringing all the pieces together in one magnificent book.

If I could only recommend one book to any person interested in natural horsemanship it would be Allen J. Hamilton, M.D.'s "Zen Mind Zen Horse." Dr. Hamilton has incorporated the wisdom of leading horse legends such as Ray Hunt, Monty Roberts, Ga Wa Ni Pony Boy and others with science and spirituality to create an amazing "bible" for students at any level of horsemanship. In this powerful book Dr. Hamilton shows a deep and clear understanding of the nature of these beautiful sentient beings we call horses. He leads us step by step toward a better understanding of all aspects of horsemanship. I am struck by his commen sense and respect for his students and horses. I am going to give each of my students a copy of this book. As a native american woman, horsewoman, registered nurse, equine therapist and mother to many I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Read it and be blessed.

This book is wonderful!!!! I read it while my daughter was in recovery and I couldn't put it down. Dr. Hamilton explains how horses live in the present, ALWAYS @ 100%, in order to survive. He shares with his readers how learning about horses can teach us to live in the present as well. If you can't get out of the past; if you are afraid of the future; or if you just can' t seem to figure out how to live in the present, read this book. Dr. Hamilton shares touching examples of how he uses equine therapy to help his patients get the very most out of every single day. His terminal patients live longer, fuller lives. You don't have to be ill to benefit from this book. You don' t have to love horses. I knew nothing about horses when I read this book. It was recommended to me by a equine therapist to help me understand how I could stop worrying about my daughter all the time by living in the present. It has helped me understand the beautiful benefit of living in the present. I find myself wanting to read it over and over whenever I lose my way. Thank you so much Dr. Hamilton. Great for all people. Everyone should read this book!

I have a lot of books about horses. Having gotten interested in horses relatively late in life, I have chosen natural horsemanship as the best way to establish a relationship with these animals. Without a doubt " Zen Mind, Zen Horse" is my favorite book. Many of them, most of them, talk about the fact that horses are prey animals and I have to believe that - but so what? Of course a prey animal needs to be concerned about whether they are about to be attacked and eaten but that still doesn't tell enough for me to "get it". Then I bought "Zen Mind, Zen Horse". I wish I had found this book in the beginning. It explains it all in a way that I can understand how we can best establish a relationship and really a partnership with a horse. I could give up all the other books but not this one.

About the Author

Thomas Engel has taught chemistry for more than 20 years at the University of Washington, where he is currently Professor of Chemistry and Associate Chair for the Undergraduate Program. Professor Engel received his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago. He then spent 11 years as a researcher in Germany and Switzerland, in which time he received the Dr. rer. nat. habil. degree from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1980, he left the IBM research laboratory in Zurich to become a faculty member at the University of Washington. Professor Engel's research interests are in the area of surface chemistry, and he has published more than 80 articles and book chapters in this field. He has received the Surface Chemistry or Colloids Award from the American Chemical Society and a Senior Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which has allowed him to establish collaborations with researchers in Germany. He is currently working together with European manufacturers of catalytic converters to improve their performance for diesel engines. Philip Reid has taught chemistry at the University of Washington since he joined the chemistry faculty in 1995. Professor Reid received his bachelor's degree from the University of Puget Sound in 1986, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992. He performed postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, campus before moving to Washington. Professor Reid's research interests are in the areas of atmosphere chemistry, condensed-phase reaction dynamics, and nonlinear optical materials. He has published more than 70 articles in these fields. Professor Reid is the recipient of a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, is a Cottrell Scholar of the Research Corporation, and is a Sloan fellow.

Ford was unique in that it had two very different bigblock engine designs during the height of the muscle car era. The original FE engine design was pioneered in the late 1950s, primarily as a more powerful replacement for the dated Y-block design. What began as torquey engines meant to move heavyweight sedans morphed into screaming high-performance mills that won Le Mans and drag racing championships throughout the 1960s. By the late 1960s, the FE design was dated, so Ford replaced it with the 385 series, also known as the Lima design, in displacements of 429 and 460 ci, which was similar to the canted-valve Cleveland design being pioneered at the same time. It didn’t share the FE pedigree of racing success, mostly due to timing, but the new design was better in almost every way; it exists via Ford Motorsports’ offerings to this day. Beginning in 1971, the 429 found its way between the fenders of Mustangs and Torinos in high-compression 4-barrel versions called the Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet, and they were some of the most powerful passenger car engines Ford had ever built. If the muscle car era had not died out shortly after the release of these powerful engines, without a doubt the 429 performance variants would be ranked with the legendary big-blocks of all time. Jocko Willink and Leif Babin have an excellent skill at taking a simple and intuitive mindset and communicating how this mindset is very key in succeeding at leading yourself or others to success. Whether its overseas or in an office high-rise they claim that this mindset will lead to higher success and growth as a person and they have convinced me of this claim through this book.What I like most about this book is that a lot of the ideas in it are intuitive or already very well known. What makes this book special is the way in which they tie a lot of these simple ideas together into an easy-to-understand mindset. They do so in a straight-forward and honest way, backing up their claims from their time in combat or from the numerous consulting experiences with various companies. While it is obvious that Willink and Babin have a lot of experience in leadership, they do a great job at presenting the content in a down-to-earth manner that is relatable. I like that they even go into detail about mistakes they have made and how they learned from it themselves. Someone who can identify their own mistakes and learn from them, to me, shows a mastery of the willingness to learn and to grow as an individual. Anyone could benefit from learning from someone with this mastery and both of these men have it.Pros:*Written in a straight-forward, down-to-earth way*Applicable advice for anyone in any situation*Very good presentation and integration of intuitive or already-known ideasCons:*NoneAdditional Considerations:Jocko has a great podcast he puts out weekly. It seems I'm in the minority here but I didn't love this book. I love leadership and I love discipline and I was hoping to hear some unique thoughts about these subjects. I hadn't heard an interview from the author and was very excited about this book.I simply didn't find any of the principles on leadership or discipline to be anything more than common knowledge. If you read books on leadership before or on discipline or military books, there doesn't seem to be anything unique here, in my opinion.If you love War Stories especially in a modern context, this is an excellent book. It's well-written and fun to read. I just didn't particularly find it helpful.For leadership technique or principles of self discipline, I would not recommend this book. For stories of overcoming challenges in Modern Combat and conflict, I would recommend this book.But ultimately, given my expectations, I was pretty disappointed. I'm also disappointed at the great reviews it's got because I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here!* Edit: I went back and read some of the lower reviews and I concur with all of them. I'm glad at least a few people noticed that this book was heavy on bragging and light on principles. The 90% five star reviews are only right if you love War Stories and don't really care about leadership or self discipline.

Extreme Ownership is a mindset which applies to everything you do. Authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin have crafted a guidebook for success in all ventures of life. They explain hard-learned principles of leadership, which they experienced first-hand as US Navy SEALs, specifically in and around their 2006 deployment to Ramadi, Iraq, one of the most dangerous places and times in the war. These principles can be applied to any relationships or walks of life; they are simple enough for anyone to understand, and broad enough to use in any situation.The book is separated into 12 chapters, each which highlights a principle of leadership. Each chapter is then broken into 3 seconds. The first section is an anecdote providing an example of how US Navy SEALs use their military experience to demonstrate each principle. The second section is how & why the principle works. The third section is an example of how that principle transforms from the battlefield, into world of businesses of all types & sizes, as experienced by the authors and their customers. I love this map series. They are my go-to maps for backpacking. They show campsites and shelters, which you usually have to scour the internet for. It shows trails and the distances--as well as the quality of the trail to some degree; for example, a black trail is well-maintained. A grey trail is THERE, technically, but isn't maintained by the park and might be obscure. I do wish the maps marked clear water sources (with, of course, the caveat that packers should always call the park to check on said source). Parking is clearly marked and if the portion of the part costs money to enter. It shows rock climbing areas. It shoes fishing areas.These are also waterproof. I'm glad I keep it with me when I hike; I've run into a few hikers here and there who are turned around and I can show them where they are and where to go. The map is so clear that, literally, in about 30 seconds, the hiker knows what direction to go and some marks to look for (like a lean-to or lake). I also use this map to start researching a trip. I just put out the map and look at the distances and presence of water or whatever. If you see an area, for example, with A LOT of parking, that area is probably more congested than you want. I'd recommend this map to anyone of any hiking level.
