I was taking an online course and thought I was making slow but appropriate progress. Because this book had full sentences and phrases that I would be using in travel and real life situations, I decided to buy it. For $2.00, this book has taught me more in a week than I learned in 8 weeks with Duolingo. Now instead of learning to say things such as, "My dog likes to drink water," and "The penguins don't like my sister's blue dress," I can actually order in restaurants, ask directions, shop, ask for help, etc. To be useful, you will either have to carry the book around with you, or make flashcards and memorize the questions and answers. I recommend both. The book also has pronounciation guides to improve your accent. If you are interested in conversation rather than grammar, you will really be pleased with this Dover edition.
This is a very simple, handy resource for learning fundamental Spanish. I speak a couple languages and have dabbled in several others, and I'm of the personal opinion that the way to go is learning phrases. Learn them in their complete, conjugated, grammatically-accurate format (and, of course, learn how to correctly pronounce them). Do this, and you never again have to guess about that particular phrase - even if you don't yet understand the grammatical reasons why the sentence/phrase got that way. So, for one just beginning who wants some quick and easy phrases in a small booklet that fits nicely into your bag or even a cargo pocket, this is one work I'd recommend.
Easy Spanish Phrase Book teaches over 700 helpful Spanish phrases for everyday use. To be exact, the book teaches 705 Spanish phrases. I like this book so much that I have mentioned it in many of my reviews as one of my top 3 learning-Spanish resources. Although this book continues to be one of my top 3 learning-Spanish resources, I will explain later why I have decided to give it 4 stars instead of 5.The Spanish vocabulary words are divide by categories. You will find categories for:- Numbers- Colors- Greetings- Eating & Drinking- The Weather- Sports and Exercise- And many other categoriesOne thing that separates this book from many other Spanish books is that it includes Spanish vocabulary related to modern technology. There is a section called “Computers and Internet.†And that’s where you’ll find the Spanish words for:- Keyboard- Computer- Laptop- Email- Website- Browser- and moreThis book also has a bonus section that covers Spanish grammar. In the bonus Spanish grammar section you’ll learn lots of Spanish adjectives, pronouns, verbs and verb tenses.Another major plus about this book is that it is so economically priced. Besides 1001 Most Useful Spanish Words, which was also written by Pablo Garcia Loaeza, this book is one of, if not, the most economically priced learning-Spanish book available on Amazon.But what I think you’ll like most about the Easy Spanish Phrase Book is the convenient size of the book. Since it is so small, it is really easy to carry. I can even put it my back pocket if I want. So if I am on vacation in Puerto Rico, Mexico or Spain, I’ll have easy access to more than 700 Spanish phrases for everyday use.I do have one criticism about this book that I want to share with readers. I own the “New Edition†of this book which was published in 2015 and has a subtitle of “Over 700 Phrases for Everyday Use.†I also own a copy of the previous edition which was published in 1994 and has a subtitle of “Over 770 Basic Phrases for Everyday Use.†So that means the “New Edition†teaches at least 70 phrases less than the previous edition of the book. I would expect that the “New Edition†would teach more phrases than the previous edition. Not less. And that is the reason why I have decided to give this book a 4-star rating instead of a 5 star rating.With that said, considering that the “New Edition†teaches Spanish vocabulary for modern technology, continues to be very economically priced and so conveniently sized, it therefore remains one of my top 3 learning-Spanish resources.In closing, I’ll leave you with the 3 learning-Spanish resources which are currently my favorites. (My list of favorites changes from time to time so you may want to check my list periodically. Updated 08-2018):1. Learn Beginner Spanish: Lessons 1 to 5 from Both Original Version & New Version of Learning Spanish Like Crazy, Including Two Bonus Lessons from New Millennium Spanish What stands out most about this program is the style of teaching used. The teaching style is very reciprocal or mutually dependent on the instructor and the student. This allows the student to not only listen but also to participate. But what appeals to me the most is that there are two bonus audio lessons included from their New Millennium Beginner Spanish program which teaches Spanish vocabulary for social media, the Web, modern technology, life styles for this millennium. Such as, eating organic food, living abroad and working as a digital nomad, and working out at a cross-fit or MMA gym. Learn Beginner Spanish also works wonders for developing an authentic sounding accent.2. 501 Spanish Verbs, 8th edition (501 Verb Series). If you think you can accomplish fluency in Spanish as an adult without mastering conjugating Spanish verbs, you are only fooling yourself. This book is an absolute essential resource for learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs. It will show you how to conjugate every Spanish verb tense imaginable. The version I have also includes a bonus CD which teaches both regular verbs and irregular verbs.3. Learn Basic Spanish with Fast Lane Spanish: Get in the Learning Spanish Fast Lane - Get In The Learning Spanish Fast Lane. This is from the same publisher that created Learn Beginner Spanish. What I love about this audio program besides the fact that they use the same teaching style found in Learn Beginner Spanish which includes native Spanish-speaking actors to help you get an authentic accent, this program does a great job of teaching Spanish pronouns and prepositions in a natural way. Most programs seem to skip over this topic and only focus on conjugating Spanish verbs. I am also impressed with Learn Basic Spanish's bonus package which allows you to attend a free, live, interactive monthly Webinar taught by a Spanish teacher from Colombia. I took three years of Spanish in high school, and am now in graduate school and have decided to pick Spanish back up again. This book is incredibly helpful and was in great condition. It is small for traveling and fits into a small bag or purse. It has incredibly useful words and phrases and is a great way to learn Spanish! I try and learn something new from it each day.
I've had the paperback edition for many years. I took Spanish lessons, but whenever I traveled to Latin America, I always carried and used this phrase book since I sometimes couldn't figure out what to say in Spanish in certain situations. The Easy Spanish Phrase Book helped me get comfortable with communicating in Spanish. I used the paperback edition so much that it became a bundle of torn and loose pages. After I got my Kindle, the Easy Spanish Phrase Book was one of the first things that I purchased. Although I've got a number of Spanish language reference books, this is still my favorite and the most used by me.
I ordered this for my boyfriend, who works in music with a lot of Spanish-speakers. It is helping him learn, leaps and bounds, and the convenient size makes it handy for keeping in a pocket, so he can get it out while they are playing. The guys wanted to know if they could get the same thing, but for learning English!
For the price, this really can't be beat. It is a little bit larger in terms of length and width than your usual travel language pocket guide, but it's very lightweight and I'm definitely planning to bring this with me on an upcoming trip.I don't speak Spanish, so I can't attest to the accuracy of the words/phrases/etc. but the topics covered in this book are what I was looking for, and the pronunciation guides are easy to use. I plan to supplement this book with some audio resources online, and between the two I expect I will be able to use at least a little of the native language on my vacation. Even simple phrases can really help open new doors.Unrelated to the actual item, Amazon (for the first time in my many years of buying from them) packed it poorly with another large heavy item so it bent during shipping, but after notifying them they promptly sent a replacement.
