Artificial Intelligence at the CrossroadsMuch has been written lately about Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), and apparently for good reasons. The idea of machines acquiring human intelligence is not easily comprehended or accepted. After all, to what extent can we yield software to mechanical instruments and how much subsequent control could we have over its use?The author of this book, Mr. Richard Yonck, takes us through the developing stages of A.I. highlighting its successes and weaknesses. It is mainly in the final chapters that he expresses his concerns. Interestingly, recent articles in the New York Times, the Guardian, and others, echo that concern and even propose some solutions.But, it is obvious that for the present, A.I. has been of great advantage to the public. We are indeed surrounded by computers doing chores for us of all types and sizes. Think of the machines that answer phones, or control our room temperature or direct our flights, etc. In manufacturing we recognize the immense task that these machine carry out under inhuman conditions. In training it has been shown how little children respond to robots in carrying out their educational duties. Computers can now read our eyes, verify our faces, and recognize our voices. The immense advantages are too many to recount here. Suffice it to recall how a computer a few years ago was able to beat the world chess champion Garry Kasparov. Every body was aghast - a machine overcomes a great human mind!!??With so much success the software people have been trying to go a step further: to introduce emotions into computer systems. This indeed is a daunting task. How could machines become emotional? Yet, attempts are going on. As a first step the computer is being trained to recognize emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, suspicion, stress, etc. This is being done laboriously by showing the computer thousands of happy faces, sad faces, worried looks, etc. until it starts recognizing a person’s mood through his facial expressions, Supposedly, a robot should one day be able to look into a human face and say “You don’t look happy today. Can I help you?”. That would surely be very endearing! But this is only a crude first step. Most think that until a computer learns to read, understand and summarize, it would be nowhere close to human intelligence.What then is worrying all the experts now ? Questions are being asked: Could computers become more intelligent and independent leaving us humans behind? Would we lose control over them? What must we do? Mr. Yonck believes this machine-human dichotomy has been with us through history and that we should continue to embrace it and co-evolve with it. Mr. Gary Marcus, In his NYTimes article (July 29) believes that an international conference should be held to agree on a future plan. Some agree; others have alternative proposals. Some of the preconceptions I had about artificial intelligence is the complete lack of the subject other than the casual fan of movies on the subject; Westworld, Space Odyssey etc.Yonck does a great job of elaborating on how the lives of humans and their ancestors millions of years ago developed technology, and from there began the evolution of both parties (technology and human) in what the book called "the greatest symbiotic relationship on earth". When reading the book, I would sometimes become intimidated by the idea of machines being able to do things like reading my emotional cues so that it could predict the probability of my purchasing a product. Also unnerving were the chapters talking about chips put into the brains of soldiers so that their emotions could be controlled during combat, and the possibility of a hostile force taking control of those soldiers. An idea comes up when reading that the super intelligence will outgrow us, and the result of such an event I find hard and unsavory to imagine. But the book is a double-edged sword. Yes, all of the aforementioned fears and possibilities are acknowledged, but so too are the benefits. The big thing I liked about the book is the idea of therapeutic Ai's. Maybe chips in the brains of soldiers is a little disagreeable to think about, but they could put an end to the terrible PTSD veterans experience. Machines capable of picking up on emotional cues at lighting speed could be used for interrogation of criminals, but more importantly they can make the lives of humans more efficient (like Abigail from the beginning of the book). Another cool thing is the care taking of the mentally ill, disabled, and senile. Sure there's a possibility that the AI could enslave or wipe all of us out, but why would it do that? Only if it was raised with a weird sense of aggression. The author brought up that an AI needs to be raised responsibly, or else it might become obsessed with cat picture or become a foulmouthed racist.In the end I think the book is really about empathy. Can the machines, after enough time reading us and living in and mapping out our brains, get empathy? Or so they still need us for that one particular trait? I like to think that our symbiosis with technology will, if anything, grow stronger through time. We will augment each other and as the last paragraph in the book put it: "Life that could go on for millions, maybe even billions of years. And if we're lucky, we'll be along for the ride. It will be a buddy movie for the ages, in this new era of artificial emotional intelligence".It's thought provoking, objective in that it presents both the negative possibilities and positive, and through Yonck's portrait of our unity--from the monkey people with the stone tools to moving cockroaches with our minds to Japanese robot seals for the elderly--it's certainly feasible. I enjoyed this book and more than recommend it for anyone concerned or curious about the future.

This book is a top notch intro to personal finance. If you're a young(ish) person, I want to start getting control of your money this book is for you. The book has a hefty focus on the mental aspect of finances, which I personally think is the most important. So I really appreciated that.But here's a quick overview of what you can expect.It covers- The mindset and mental blocks you may have around money (based on how you grew up)- How to overcome bad financial mindsets and how to create a good financial mindset- Different situations you might be in and how to handle them (allows different people to relate in different ways)- Ideal benchmarks for you to hit in order to be "on track" with your money at certain ages- Different financial products (investment accounts, bank accounts, credit cards) and how to look for the best ones- Basics of investing and retirement planning- Basics of buying a house vs renting- Info about credit cards and credit reportsBasically, this book covers all things personal finance in a really approachable and digestible way. I've been studying finance for years, and rarely come across something this comprehensive that still holds my attention. There's a good balance of storytelling and practical advice.It's not an investment book or advanced level retirement planning guide or hardcore tax strategy book. It's a solid book on how to go from not knowing much about your money to totally killing it. It would be comparable to Ramit Sethi's I Will Teach You To Be Rich, if you like that book, you'll love this one too.Highly recommend.

This book has some great tips for young adults with no clue how to manage finances. The first 8 chapters deal with some pretty basic concepts. However, if you have the basics down, there is very little new information in here. Additionally, the way the book was written is a little pandering-- we get it, Millenials like brunch. As a Millenial, I found that it was a little too kitschy and basic. That said, it does contain sound financial advice, and I did learn some new information from the two chapters on investment and retirement.

I knew that pre ordering this book would be a wise investment and Broke Millennial has not failed me. About 1/2 way through the book and have already implemented some lifestyle changes to create a more sustainable financial future for my family and I. Really looking forward to this author's next book because I know she'll write relevant and interesting information.

Erin Lowry is an entertaining author whose appeal reaches across the generations. I'm a nursing student going into my senior year of college. My first choice of books is definitely not a finance book. I know I needed to get my act together if I wanted to be successful with my money. I am completely blown away by this book. Erin Lowry is amazing. She truly knows how to connect with her audience (even the ones who don't have the first clue about finance). I talk about this book all the time and have incorporated so many of the things she talks about doing into my life. I am already starting to see the benefit of buying this book. I recommend to any age group but especially younger adults! Love it!

Unfortunately, I do not agree with the majority of reviews on here. I found Lowry's voice to be conceded and unappealing. She consistently tried to down play what she was saying by putting a joke in parentheses after a serious statement often making it seem as though she was doubting herself. Lowry is, from what she's written, phenomenal with money. For someone like me, who is not so great with money, I felt dumb for not doing what Lowry stated should have already been done. As a millennial, I find this to be an unnecessary expense.

I highly recommend this book to any financially struggling twenty-something. I'm in my late 20's and have never quite found my footing financially - it always seemed like it was one thing after another whenever I tried to start saving money. After reading this book, I made some major changes and finally feel like I can breathe and like I can afford my car payment, groceries, and fun dinners out with friends and family (I no longer have to pretend like I'm more anti-social than I actually am). I still have a lot of work to do, but I truly appreciated the way this book laid everything out. It was easy to understand with good references to being a millennial. I appreciated when the author laid out the best way to do something, but recognized that as a millennial, we'd probably rather do it a different way - she encourages you to go about solving and saving the way that you'll succeed best at it. I learned a lot about myself through reading this book and feel like financial goals are finally in my horizon.

I've read my fair share of personal finance books but it wasn't until I picked this book up that I realized how very few of them are geared for folks in their early 20s, recent grads and young professionals.Two things stand out. One, it couples sound financial knowledge with advice on how to reorient your attitude towards money in a more productive way, especially with partners and peers. Two, the advice on both debt and investing were extremely relevant to where I am financially.An example of excellent framing: Erin suggests having a great credit score as financial insurance to give you access to the best credit products if you find yourself in a financial bind which you intuit, but reframed my relationship and understanding of debt and my own credit score.Can't recommend this enough!

Some of this section reminded me of Keep the Aspidistra Flying, a novel Orwell wrote on the same theme. His conclusion is this:The fact that has got to be faced is that to abolish class-distinctions means abolishing a part of yourself. Here am I, a typical member of the middle class. It is easy for me to say that I want to get rid of class-distinctions, but nearly everything I think and do is a result of class-distinctions. One day this summer I was riding through Letchworth when the bus stopped and two dreadful-looking old men got on to it. They were both about sixty, both very short, pink and chubby, and both hatless. One of them was obscenely bald, the other had long grey hair bobbed in the Lloyd George style. They were dressed in pistachio-coloured shirts and khaki shorts into which their huge bottoms were crammed so tightly that you could study every dimple. Their appearance created a mild stir of horror on top of the bus. The man next to me, a commercial traveller I should say, glanced at me, at them, and back again at me, and murmured, “Socialists,” as who should say, “Red Indians.” He was probably right—the I.L.P. were holding their summer school at Letchworth. Well worth reading, especially for anyone who has enjoyed other books by George Orwell.

The kindle version of the book is unreadable due to numerous errors, presumably resulting from some poor text recognition software used to digitize the text. I've listed a few examples below, taken directly from the kindle version, along with some snarky comments.Page 17 (typos): "Most of the things one imagines in hell are if there. " People who sell written materials without proofreading them first can go hell if a hand basket.Page 17 (missing words?) "When you finally got there - and getting there is a in itself..." A chore? A grind? Maybe the letter "a" is just short for "ass." Getting there is ass in itself. I could get on board with that.Page 17 (punctuation errors): "They are feeding it on to the conveyor belt, a moving rubber, belt a couple of feet wide which runs a yard or two behind them." To be, or not to, be.Page 19 (punctuation errors): "This is chiefly because the mere effort of getting from place to place; makes it difficult to notice anything else, In some ways it is even disappointing, or at least is unlike what you have, expected." Wow.I'll be requesting a refund.

Most folks only know the great Orwell through Animal Farm and 1984 (or at the very least, they associate him with them) but his earlier material is essential reading for insight to his socialist beliefs. His colorful, honest style of reportage whilst lodging, eating, working and living amongst the coal miners in England's north country provides a harrowing account of workers' struggles and tragedies and a scathing rebuke of capitalist greed and apathy toward it's labor force. You could almost taste the coal dust and breathe the fetid air with his descriptive detail.

Book one, describing the conditions of the lower classes in the North of England in 1937, is a sensitive contribution to a voluminous tradition. Book two, which details the class prejudices impeding socialism, is truly original and quite relevant to 2018 America.Orwell writes as a member of the “sinking middle class,” whose pretensions linger despite a three pound a week income (~$300 today) and occasional hunger. He captures the animus of a much larger group of teachers, clerks and petty civil servants who have proletarian incomes but cling to a Tory identity. Orwell’s conclusion that social identity must be subordinated to common economic interests anticipates the most bitter debates between progressives today.

It's essentially two separate long essays. The first part is a harrowing description of the slums in industrial England around the late 1920s early 30s. The second concerns class distinctions and the inability of the socialist movement to bridge them. His descriptions of the wackjobs infesting it are eerily familiar and match up perfectly to the SJW/ProgLeft lunatics of today. A must read for anyone interested in the genesis of his later more famous Animal Farm and 1984.

This is sort of a bittersweet review for me. My granddad was a coal miner in England and Wales around the time Orwell was referencing in the book. As I read it, I could not help but think of him down in the mines and how terrifying and hard that job must have been. It made me really sad to think about it, but also very proud because I come from very hard working stock. So yes, in a way I really liked it but it saddened me to think of the hardships he went through. My mother told me stories about when he would come home from the mines and they were so similar to Orwell's tales.

Doreen's work is fabulous, however, Hay House (the publisher) makes a fraudulent promise with this book. Clearly stated on the cover is that the book "includes a free Meditative Audio Download to guide you in learning and using the seven sacred secrets". I learned from their customer service that this is not true. They offer only an audio that you can listen to online from your computer, not a download. For someone who prefers to meditate away from my computer this is not a solution. I was very disappointed in Hay House for making a false promise and in not being able to meditate to integrate this information more fully.

This book is small but powerful, small enough to stuff in a bag and read on the plane from Baltimore to San Diego. It's a little bigger than a 5 x 7 photo, and only108 pages. It includes a CD of Doreen discussing the concepts in the book, so you are getting a double package. (It is NOT a meditative CD like it says in Amazon's writeup.) And, the book and CD are clear and easy to understand, as are all of Doreen's books and CDs. So, if you're going to tell me, "I don't have time to read," then fine. Listen to the CD a couple of times in the car on the way to work until you find the time to read the book. (You know darned well you FIND the time for what you REALLY want to do anyway!)In this little bombshell, Angel Lady writes her interpretation of the Hermetic manual, The Kybalion, a classic esoteric self-help book, first published in 1908. Hermes Trismegistus was a great spiritual teacher in ancient Egypt who wrote and lectured about the ability of the MIND to create and heal.The CD has 7 tracks, explaining the Kybalion and the Seven Sacred Secrets. Doreen tells us we all have special powers from the Divine. We can learn how to harness them by studying these secrets.The 7 Principles are: 1) MENTALISM (the Universe is mental, held in the mind of The All) Spirit is The All; Using the Laws of the Universe to rise above the lower vibrations of pain and suffering to live life in the higher vibrations, and above pain and suffering. 2 ) CORRESPONDENCE "As above, so below and as below, so above". 3 ) VIBRATION (everything vibrates. I am delighted with this little Book and the accompanying CD. I started to purchase the Kindle edition but decided not to since I wouldn't have gotten the CD and I am finding that to be the best part. I notice that several reviewers were disappointed that the CD wasn't a meditation but instead it was a reading of the book by the author. Thank goodness for that! I have listened to it over and over while driving and it has contributed to my deeper understanding of the message in the text. Now I am going back through the book to dig out the gems. I take something brilliant from every chapter.THE LAW OF USE: "The possession of Knowledge unless accompanied by a manifestation and expression in action, is like the hoarding of precious metals: a vain and foolish thing. Knowledge, like wealth, is intended for use. The Law of Use is Universal, and he who violates it suffers by reason of his conflict with natural forces." ~ The Kybalion"Beware of mental miserliness, in which you hoard your ideas and inspirations. Instead, express into action that which you have learned."

I already read the Kybalion by the Three Initiates and understood it well, but I was curious as to how the perspective of a woman would interpret the great wisdom held in the Kybalion. This is my first book by Miss Virtue. I must say I was very pleased and happy both that Miss Virtue wrote this book and that I was wise enough to read basically the same book twice but written from a not wholly different female perspective. It's actually quite easily to immediately put the knowledge attained from this great work to use. Well written book from an awesome author. I may have to see what this Angel talk is about after all

Just read the Kybalion from which this book is copied without any worthwhile comments or insights. And keep in mind that since 17th century it is well known that Hermetic doctrine is a fake (Corpus Hermeticum was composed by Hellenic philosophers during the decline of their culture about 2000 years ago)

Fascinating book - a subject I knew nothing about so it was wonderful to reat up on it. The Hermetic system is very logical and based on science - rhythms, vibration, polarities etc. In terms of "how" to work with these in order to manifest, there were no in depth instructions, just generalities. It's possible to work with those generalities but the true value of the book is as an introduction to HermesT and his system of keeping oneself vibrating in the higher registers. Worth it for that particular reason.

I have read a lot of spiritual books. Doreen does warn that you may have heard these principles, which is true but the way she ties them together IS new for me. One builds on the other which gives you a whole new understanding of these laws. A lot of reviews have said that the CD is not a meditation (as stated on the cover), it's not, but what I did was listen to the CD first, where she discusses the 7 laws & goes into a little detail. This way you can get a general understanding of the principles & see how they work together. Then I read the book, which goes into a lot more detail. It gives you a chance to really "digest" and understand what your reading. She gives examples of how to use them in your daily life. WOW it really works! I can't believe it's so easy. Get it you won't be sorry!

This book is clearly written, engaging, and original. A great way to learn about small independent museums in the UK, and a great way to rethink what museums are all about. Anyone interested in museums will find this thought-provoking.

I love that this book didn't try for overkill; filling as many pages as possible. They went with quality over quantity. I purchased this book as a graduate museum studies student but more importantly as one of those folks who still travels the truly back roads of the state I live in. Every small town, even just a crossroad, seems to have a small "museum" or historical center. Most often, these establishments are manned by volunteers, do not receive grant funding, and are often dimissed by professionals as not worth examining. I am a sincere supporter that the greatest treasures can be found any where, including the places where you would least likely expect. A must read for any museum studies student who is considering internship requirements, museum professionals, and those looking to put perspective on this unique slice of our past.
