JOHN HARGROVE has 14 years' experience as a killer whale trainer. His experience spans both SeaWorld of California and SeaWorld of Texas where he was promoted to the highest ranking Senior Trainer. John also has an international reputation, having been a Supervisor with MarineLand in the south of France. He resigned his position with SeaWorld in August 2012 and currently resides in New York City. I was told when I was about 18 by the, then, Director of Training at Sea World that he would never hire a woman to train dolphins. This was after I had completed very grueling physical training and long study had a divers certification and had qualified myself beyond the usual applicant to achieve this dream I had since I was twelve. (This was just after the original Shamu went slightly postal in front of television cameras on his bikini-clad secretary.) The size of the tank they kept the whale in and the white sided dolphin named George for years was only just big enough for her to turn around in. Who wouldn't act out after years of being kept in what was essentially for her a closet? I knew Shamu, often visited her between shows and she was an especially sweet and gentle creature. Her treatment and the tricks they had her do were pretty horrible. In fact, the only thing that I ever saw Sea World do as a part of it's shows that I actually enjoyed back then was show how a blindfolded dolphin could negotiate through hoops with sonar. Other then that they were just glitzy and silly circus shows that were mildly offensive. I hoped that if I were hired I could somehow eventually shape and change those things but now I can see that I was saved a lot of failure, pain and heartache in the long run with the unfair death of that dream. Sea world obviously changed their policy eventually and had many wonderful female trainers but the dark heart of the company and it's values seems to have never really changed. This book was excellent and I learned much even though I have been an interested observer over the years. The things that Sea World kept secret were worse and more toxic to the animals and the people who really cared for them than I knew or even imagined. I can only hope that sustained public opinion will make them change and create an environment that the surviving animals can thrive in.

This is a much better book than I expected. Its a more detailed examination of Hargrove's experience as a trainer at Seaworld and about his concerns about their treatment of orca's than could be explored in the documentary "Blackfish." This is the best possible book Hargrove could have written; it is not perfect but it touches on every relevant aspect of his life as an orca trainer, from his obsession and interest as a boy up through the making of the documentary and just after.When we see how interested he was in the whales from a young age, and how he begged his parents to take him to the Texas Seaworld frequently as a teenager, how many questions he asked the trainers from a young age, one sees how deep his passion goes: he really does love these animals.And he does not "trash" Seaworld at all -- it is clear how integral their presence was to his developing interests as a teen and then to his long apprenticeship as a trainer. He learned a lot and was dedicated to the whales and for years, to Seaworld too. It was the combination of the standards Seaworld had for its trainers as well as Hargrove's own passion, intelligence, and feeling for the whales that ultimately led him to conclude what he did about whales in captivity, at Seaworld and anywhere else. The point is not that Seaworld in particular is "bad," as they are probably among the most rigorous and conscientious in their treatment of the orcas, compared to other less-well funded for profit "entertainment" outfits, but that captivity is bad for the orcas, period. Not kind of bad, but very harmful to the quality of their lives. How captivity stunts them and hurts them.Hargrove includes interviews and research by many biologists and others who've studied orcas as well. The book is genuinely well-rounded, and has much more depth than I expected. Some of this is clearly just Hargrove, who is intuitive and smart, but whose standards are high for most things, it seems, but he also had a co-writer who very likely helped make this such a good book -- it has both depth and heart -- Hargrove's love and respect for these animals is clear throughout. At first I wasn't sure I was going to like him (he seemed a little arrogant) and I thought the book might just be a capitalization on the firm, an exercise in vanity, so to speak. But it isn't -- its the real deal: a very good book, well-designed (and I mean in the choice of content and the organization of chapters) and written, presenting a very good mix of research in the field with Hargrove's extensive experience to back it up. I really enjoyed reading it and learned a lot. Highly recommended.

Said trainer John Hargrove describes how, for the longest time, he wished to become a Sea World orca trainer and the lengths to which he went to become one. Hargrove tells about the atrocious conditions the orcas are kept in at Sea World's parks and how orcas' lives differ in captivity as compared to in the wild. Hargrove also you certain facts about killer whales, such as the etymology of the words "killer whale" and "orca" as well as what the parts of an orca are called. Hargrove touches on the controversial documentary "Blackfish" and his contributions to and opinion of said documentary. Perfect book for the cruise.

This book is perfect for planning my Baltic Cruise scheduled later this summer. Geographer, Dr. Lew Deitch, certainly knows his subject. He has visited many, if not most, of these ports 30 or 40 times, has an excellent grasp of the history of the region, and writes clearly. Maps and photographs are helpful.Sometimes, there may have been a bit more information than I wanted to know, but this is the kind of book where you can take what you want and not spend too much time on what you don’t need at the moment. I am sure, though, I will be going back to many areas that I did not read as carefully and re-read them later. This book will be a companion on the cruise ship and in the ports.The book begins with a nice overview of the geography and history of the region. The author then describes 13 port cities in 9 countries around the Baltic Sea (Germany, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, followed by 7 more ports (in Sweden and Finland) around the Gulf of Bothnia. Each description includes an overview of the city, local history, physical layout, sights, dining, and shopping. Dr. Deitch provides information on transportation, tips on how best to see things, his opinions (which I appreciate), and very practical advice about each port.On Kindle, the maps and photos are a bit awkward and I am toying with buying the paperback to take on the trip. I love Kindle for traveling because I don’t have to lug bulky books. But if this one doesn’t weigh too much, I may try to fit it in my luggage.

This book is labeled 2018-2019, but it looks like it was either printed in 1973 or home made in someone's basement. All the pictures are low quality and black and white. The type on the pages looks and feels like it was printed on a laser printer.I've only read a small portion, but so far it seems to be a very high level synopsis when it comes to activities, and focuses more on historical and economical information. I wish it was the other way around.

What a talent. Oops, I'd never heard of Billy Collins until he read the most delicious poem on the new Prarie Home Companion radio show. Poetry is manna to my soul and Collins' funny and deep introspective reflections on the human heart, on the ordinary, on the every day are surprising and even affirming. Loved this book and am in awe of this poet. Great read in delectable little morsels, one per page. Yum.

Billy Collins poems cover a wide range of subject matter they're thought provoking & beautiful. I find myself frequently revisiting this book whether curled up on the couch or needing a quiet pick me up at work on a stressful day. It's a big book of quiet comfort I highly recommend

While I enjoyed this book, I really felt that Galatea was not the sympathetic character that Robin was aiming for. I felt there was a little too much placed on all of the games, and I felt that she really fell apart in the second half of the book. I liked the ending with Galatea and Joy, but unfortunately that will not be my lasting memory of this book. I went from loving Audra and Skye's characters to really questioning them after reading this book. I felt that they would try to take the next step with Jasmine (furthering the changes that Andie started), but instead they seemed to enjoy going along with everything. Muriel continued to be character whom I really liked, and I hope that she in not forgotten in the next book.

WOW! just WOW! I loved it!Keep'em coming Robin, please. I absolutely loved the games, the witty back and forth with the character's, and I absolutely love a long novel. I did not want it to end. Great job!

Love your books especially this series sad about Muriel wish could help her. Otherwise the series is good. Thank you for writing so well it brightens my day when I have a bad day.

It took me awhile to finish reading this segment of the series. There was a lot of time spent reading/watching Galatea deal with her "people pleasing" life choices and low self-esteem to boot. This novel took the time to go deeper into how the off worlders chose to have humans pay their debt. So, it was too long at points. I found myself not liking Galatea's tantrums. Miss Roseau was able to create environments where I 'saw' the challenge events and experienced the interactions between species.Read the series. The books are long, intense and engaging.It has to blow up in the final book of this series. I'm on to the last one.

I had originally thought to give this book only four stars, as there were many similarities with that of Andie's story, but in the end the story took a very different path. Things got a little interesting and though much time was spent in the jungle and there was a lot of fondling of Galatea' s bum ( btw there isn't anything wrong with that :)) I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I identified so much with the main character ( being naturally submissive and so on...), and throughout much of the story understood her struggles. Her wanting to please, but fighting to have a voice, it was great to see her character develop. Great job and please continue with another installment soon. I know that I asked this last time I had read and rated the previous story (without realizing that there was another installment already available) so I hope to find that the author publishes another soon.

This is an awesome book...still a continuation of a fantastic series. Robin has done an excellent job of telling this story and continuing on with the lives of previous characters.I really hope there is a book seven. All the characters are magnificent.

Once again Robin has delivered two more books in this series that have been fabulous with minor editing errors, otherwise very good continuations to the story. I hope that there will be more in this series to come, and that the other novels with series have more stories to come.

Worst book of the series. Meanders all over, is full of hundreds of pages of aliens chasing humans through forests, has a submissive that spends half her time angrily having outbursts over nothing then apologizes when there is an issue, complains about her treatment as a sex object yet allows everybody to fondle her butt. Just a mess. The final romance is rushed and im not convinced they like each other.

About the Author

Sanya Richards-Ross is a Jamaican-American track and field athlete who competes internationally for the United States. She is the fastest American woman in history at 400 meters and the winner of multiple Olympic gold medals. Off the track, Sanya is an entrepreneur, TV personality, public speaker, and humanitarian. She designs and executes sports clinics across the United States to educate, empower, and teach youth with tools and strategies to excel both on and off the track. Sanya is married to two-time Super Bowl champion Aaron Ross and they live in Austin, TX.

This book transcends sports. It gives such a great example of true life, things that we can control and those uncontrollable. It's also an even greater example of how God's love is always perfect and everything that we do happening in his timing. Excellent book!

This book is an amazing account of a life that was broken but God restored. This will help many women who have gone through similar situations but are afraid to tell their story. Thanks Sanya for allowing God to use you, for such a time as this, to help women to accept God's forgiveness. We have ALL sinned and come short of the glory of God, but our God is a compassionate, forgiving God. Hallelujah!!!!!!Get your copy today, you won't be disappointed.

Wow, this book was a page turner! I love how Sanya was so transparent. With God's Grace, she made it thru and she conquered. Thank you so much for giving us all of you in this book!!! BTW this is the first book I have finished within two days!

This book is well written. Sanya gives an open and honest view of her journey. Blessed with a chance to meet her a couple of times I knew that she was a genuine person but the book just confirms her genuine care about people, family, and the sport.

Great read. I could not put it down. I am thankful for her testimony. It has inspired me to follow my dreams and lean on God.

I’m a former collegiate track athlete and this was such an easy read for me. Gave me life motivation and acceptance on how my track career ended. It’s cool to learn the things media doesn’t show or talk about.

I have been a huge fan of Sanya Richards-Ross for as long as I can remember. She made me fall in love with track and field. I love the way her discipline in the sport has carried over to all areas in her life. She is an inspiration.
