She gets at the ultimate truth, as she puts it, that weight is most fundamentally an excuse for ducking out of your life.Caryn writes with engaging authenticity that draws you in and makes you really want to succeed - no matter how many times you’ve failed at weight loss before. If you are sick of obsessing about weight and food, this book will change your life.
As a busy professional woman I can totally relate to the feeling of wondering why I can handle everything else in life but just can't figure out this weight thing. And traveling already knocked me off kilter, and took days (ok sometimes weeks!) to get back into the diet swing upon my return. Caryn's approach takes you through a process that not only considers your body but also your brain. Her approach works - I can attest to it! This is a must read for any woman who wants to end the struggle with weight once & for all.
Being an already health-conscious, active, yogi, I took a lot from this book. Gillen’s approach is not only practical, but it’s psychological. It’s learning to step outside yourself in order to really see why you do what you do. She asks excellent, simple, questions such as, “how do you feel?†and â€Did you show up for yourself?†The beauty behind this book/method is asking yourself wise questions, listening to your body, and learning to plan, regardless of our busy lives. Even if it is eating out with girlfriends at happy hour (which is absolutely not frowned upon), how many drinks will I plan to have? What types of foods will I choose? Having a set plan and expectation, and following through is what it is all about. It’s not about serious, tiring, meal-prep, either. It’s about knowing what quality foods we can put in our bodies. It’s about simplifying. It’s about following through with our own expectations. Food journaling is not something I never did in the past. Writing down what I consume has really opened my eyes to my consumption. Consumption is a key-word here. Being mindful about what we consume is where the real work lies. It’s so easy to mindlessly eat a bag of potato chips, to mindlessly drink that bottle of wine. Mindfully consuming has changed my entire perspective. Write it down. Show up. Enjoy every bit of that bottle, but follow the plan. Was the entire bottle apart of the plan? We live in a consumers world. It’s incredible to think we are blessed enough to live in so much excess. With all the excess around us, do we really need that, right now? Is it something we can enjoy later? Probably. Thank you, Caryn for sharing both your mindset and your knowledge. We can all learn quite a few things from this book. Cheers to your health, cheers to this journey, and cheers to being more in-tune with your body than ever before.

I'm writing this review because I love reading people's real experiences before I dive into trying something new or different, I hands down recommend this book! I had thought of myself as a healthy eater and I was trying to be more active but had kinda hit a spot where I wasn't getting anywhere and not meeting goals I set for myself. I read this book and did the coaching with the author and started to see results and learning more about myself and my body in the process, there are some key phrases in this book like "show up for yourself" I tell myself that everyday now and live by it, I need to take care of myself like I take care of others! I think the book is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to better themselves and make a lifestyle change but the coaching takes it to another level, having someone that is passionate about your success and helping meet goals you never thought were possible is priceless...
This book is so funny, but more importantly, real, relatable and practical. I've tried nearly every weight loss program invented and this book introduces some unique insights that changed how I feel about weight loss (or my previous lack there of). With all the helpful worksheets and honest directives, I now have new tools and a new attitude. For the first time in a long time, I feel confident about taking control over my entire life, not just my weight. This book is SO much more than a weight loss guide, it's a book about how to own your life and show up for yourself.
One of my favorite ways to spend a Sunday afternoon is reading a diet book while eating a whole package of cookies. You can feel virtuous about reading the book and still enjoy yourself. When I began reading Gillen’s I Wanted It, I didn’t even bother with the cookies because it was short. It was an easy read without all the padding that most diet books include to get up to 300 pages. And it was concrete and informative. I tend to read things and think, “That’s a good idea,†and then immediately forget them, but I Wanted It includes worksheets and lists to remind you of the important points. Finally, her program is very do-able. I kept reading and thinking, “I can do that.†I’m very excited about trying Gillen’s program as soon as I go shopping and buy some healthy food. This could be a life-changer for anyone who has struggled with food in the past.
