Every Spring and every Fall when I reset my clocks I anticipate a new Gerri Hill book. This spring I was introduced to wanna be lawyer turned detective turned security guard turned private investigator, Finley Knight or Finn for short. Finn is a loner whose only friend is an eighty-two year old janitor, Sammy, who clean her office complex located on a foggy dead-end road called Moonlight Avenue in Corpus Christi. Finn has no girlfriend but often thinks of a one-night stand with a young blond she met in a bar six months prior. According to her daydreams their chemistry was life changing. As Finn goes about her life she investigates a variety of cases, especially cheating spouses. One day someone named Rylee Moore approaches Finn's office looking for employment. Rylee does not take no for an answer and is finally hired as a receptionist. After some murders ensue Finn and Rylee begin to investigate the mysterious happenings. They work with Dee Woodard, a detective from the Corpus Christi police department. The book was well paced, it kept me interested, the chemistry between the main characters sparked, and the sexual tension grew after the main characters admitted as interesting fact to each other. Give Ms. Hill's latest offering a read, since like the time change, another book won't be available for six months!
Woohoo! I'm in every book lover's paradise right now! This author gave me one of the best mystery/thrillers I have read for the year and I am giving her the coffee cup honor because I was reluctant to put down my kindle and go to bed. Finley also known as Finn, stole my heart from the first page because she is the epitome of the strong, silent and super confident professional private eye. If I had to be a fictional character, I would definitely be Rylee because she loves food as much as I do! She is the perfect investigating sidekick and I adore everything about her. There isn't a dull moment in this book and I am pretty sure that I wasn't the only one to lose sleep because I got caught up in Finn and Riley's world. I can't wait to read another captivating story from this superb author!
YES! Gerri Hill's crime/mystery/thriller bug is back in full force with her latest, "Moonlight Avenue!" I KNEW it!! Haven't had THIS much fun since her Hunter, Ross & Sullivan and Johnston & Riley serials!! Read it in one swift sitting! I especially LOVED this latest one, which certainly could turn into a series if the ending (and a certain third MC in the book for that matter!) were any indication, which I'm dead chuffed by the sheer possibility of it!The reason why "Moonlight Avenue" is now my favourite crime/mystery story and series (if it’s expanded into one, that is!) of Hill's as opposed to her other serials of the same genre comes in threefold:1) It involves a private investigation agency headed by one of the main protagonists, Finn, a P.I. (Private Investigator). A profession I've always been fascinated with because of how unrestricted, unorthodox it is when it comes to solving crimes/mysteries. Less rules, so to speak, not to mention, having a wider scope in terms of who to work with including various branches of the law enforcement, types of cases (meaning, more interesting stories to tell and plots to devise). A refreshing choice of profession as it's not commonly utilised/featured in lesfic's crime genre, plus the way Hill detailed the intricacies of the P.I.'s job is what makes it thrilling, so vastly different from the usual three letter agencies (FBI, CIA, DEA, etc...) because it's right on the edge of the always-fascinating grey area - legal/illegal, lawful/unlawful, right/wrong, making it more dangerous, ever riskier and obviously more thrills. So, naturally, I was excited by it all! Well done, Ms. Hill, for mixing things up in this well-utilised genre in lesfic!2) A deliberately unhurried slow-burn romance which, imo, is the ideal way to have romance in the crime/mystery genre, so that the crime itself doesn't get sidetracked whilst the romance can build up slowly throughout the book, making it more like a backdrop of the crime/mystery plot, always present but never eclipsing the main case. In this one, Hill nailed it on the head, making the entire execution of the story (crime and romance) evermore effective, equally fascinating and satisfying. And worth mentioning, Hill's delivery of Finn & Riley's slow-burn was nothing short of addictive and downright fun to explore!3) There's a THIRD protagonist! Yup, a detective, with her own interesting back story to boot! In essence, it's a TRIO of kick-arse women involved in the case (and potentially others in future!). When Hill introduced Dee into the fold in this book, I immediately exclaimed, "Charlie's Angels!!" Yup, Charlie's Sabrina, Kelly & Jill/Kriss vs. Hill's Finn, Rylee and Dee. Three strong, independent, resourceful women with the smarts and skill-sets, solving crimes under the umbrella of a private investigation agency. Sound familiar? Even MORE cool and badarse? All three are lesbians!!! I bloody LOVE it!!! Finally we have our very own Angels-in-action in the world of lesfic!I absolutely loved how Finn and Rylee came together. "Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony." Refreshing, I thought. You'll see. Finn, a P.I. for a decade after leaving the police force, a loner with a past that she was still reeling in, not to mention, a mystery woman who'd been invading her mind for reasons you'll find when you read the book. Then, Rylee, who had her own very interesting past to deal with, showed up one day out of the blue, asking her for a job. Loved that scene, as described and relayed so effectively by Hill. It immediately reminded me of Robert Galbraith's Cormoran Strike and Robin! Read and see if you agree...that is if you’ve read the Strike series, obvs! Finn had a dark family past, so did Cormoran. Robin was interested in the sleuthing and went from being Strike’s assistant to partner-in-crime, so was Rylee, albeit under very different and defo more intriguing circumstances. Both Finn and Cormoran were loners, quiet and broody. Robin and Rylee were more upbeat, go-getters, assertive. Their yang to their bosses’ yin, really.I LOVED Rylee! LOVED her character - so fascinating to me, a total opposite of Finn's, which worked out fabulously well in every angle. Their chemistry was off the charts from the moment they laid eyes on each other. And their moment was totally different because of.... well, you simply have to read it to find out why their encounter and its related circumstances were different. I thought it was such a brilliant and refreshing idea, tbh! Really made their chemistry even more acutely endearing, not to mention, HOT! If you know Hill's writing, it's guaranteed that how she weaved Finn and Rylee's connection will most definitely ensnare your impulses, leaving you wanting more! I certainly did!The best thing about these two characters that was so utterly different than the other couples in Hill's crime genre? The very deliberate pacing of the slow-burning flame of romance, harnessed ever-so seductively between Finn and Rylee every time they were in each other's space, which paralleled each step of progress made in their crime/mystery investigation, slowly heating up to a fever pitch of lingering yearning and aching longing for the characters and the reader, alike (for me at least!), as their tentative professional relationship slowly became something more sensual, more provocative, deeper, as they eventually got closer and more daring with their attraction and desire for each other. And then there was the always-alluring age-gap trope, which Hill played it very well as depicted in the tantalising banter and dialogue that ensued between Rylee and Finn. This was where Rylee truly shone in her character as she tenaciously probed, prodded and scrutinised Finn's carefully built emotional walls, slowly breaking them down, penetrating her inner feelings as Finn knew she could no longer resist Rylee's magnetic pull. I utterly enjoyed how Hill dealt with the age-gap issue which I thought was invigorating to explore! I won't elaborate here because it needs to be read directly for its effect. The only thing I'd say is it's one reason why I absolutely loved Rylee! She's just too adorable, at times playfully flirtatious and cheeky, with that irresistible "glint" in her eyes! In other words, perfect for someone like Finn (imo!). I could see these two going through all those slow dance steps, IRL, tbh! Well done, Ms. Hill!I had so much fun with the stake out and surveillance scenes that Finn and Rylee were both involved in. It was whilst they were cooped up in the car together that most of the explorations of their own feelings and thoughts about each other came to be. It was a thrill to explore their relationship that way because Hill would inject their work activities (recon work, brain-storming of theories and ideas about the case during their stake outs in the car) in-between Rylee's attempt to penetrate Finn's emotional walls and getting to know her more. All the attempts from both Rylee and Finn to change the subject whenever they felt they had gone too far in the personal in their interactions, made their chemistry and the intensity of their mutual desire/attraction for each other even more intoxicating! This dance carried on in their office as well which was just such fun to read! In other words, Hill did it again with her brilliant knack for producing ardently expressed words and dialogue that make the reader feel the intensity of the MCs' feelings and desire for each other ever-so intrinsically. Hence, making Rylee and Finn's romance evermore engaging, flowing so naturally in the crime/mystery genre.Speaking of the genre, as usual, Hill's crime/mystery plot was absorbing and tickled my sense of intrigue and curiosity as usual with her persuasive weaving of various angles and possibilities that tied to the trio's investigations, evidence and pure instincts. I loved the fact that a couple of the crimes had a personal effect on Finn, past and present, which I won't divulge here because it needs to be explored by the reader directly in order to feel the sense of urgency, intrigue and suspense. Plus, the implications opened the door to Finn's inner psyche as Rylee attempted to have a better understanding of the object of her attraction and growing desire who was also her boss, if that weren't complicated enough already! I was also gratified by Hill's methodical approach to elaborating Finn's profession as a P.I., all the details that encompassed the scope of her job in the field - surveillance, tailing, taking pictures, and particularly noting the specific time of each encounter. I was captivated by all the intricacies of the field work of a private eye! That's one of the main reasons this book is now my favourite crime story/potential series of Hill's (even though it's still not officially a series yet but it's my wish, nonetheless!).Meanwhile, I also enjoyed the inclusion of Dee who completed the trio, whose friendship with Finn was explored from the ground up so their growth throughout the story felt authentic. When Rylee was subsequently introduced into the fold, it was even more entertaining, with all the insinuations, banter and teasing (you need to read it to absorb the hilarity of it!), making their camaraderie so much more realistic and fun! The trio's chemistry was so organic and genuine. I truly believed their friendship. I could see them delving into future cases together, investigating and solving them whilst having fun together! I simply can't wait to see if Hill will expand it into a series, so I get to explore deeper into Dee's character and her back story, particularly where Angela was concerned! Oh, just wait until you read this book and you'll see how Hill managed to make Dee's character compelling enough to pique my curiosity to a level that I wanted to find out more especially about her residual emotional link to her so-called past relationship despite Hill's limited revelations about her back story/past. Fingers crossed, the next installment will feature Dee and Angela... Thanks to Hill's effective description of Dee's inner psyche regarding Angela, I really am rooting for them. Oh well...a reader can wish, can't she? Besides her personal life, I was also thrilled that Hill also explored how Dee's involvement with Finn and Rylee would ultimately force her to face her dilemma as the investigation reached a point of her having to question her own loyalty to the police force versus her sense of duty to solve the case that slowly but surely dissolved into chaos as more bodies began to drop, and the lives of the people she cared about were at stake including her own. All in all, I had such gratification and much fun delving into the story - the intriguing case with all its chaos, conspiracies, not to mention, the miscellaneous cases that Finn was hired to do as a P.I., the trio of characters, Finn, Rylee and Dee, all of whom had absolutely compelling back stories and captivating personas, Finn and Rylee's fantastic chemistry and that deliciously slow-burning romance that was oh-so irresistibly seductive and sensual especially with that mutual "obstacle" going on between them..! Yeh, read and find out! I thought it was quite refreshing and addicting to read particularly when it was played out in parallel with an active crime investigation they were trying to solve. Well done, Ms. Hill!Anyway... I can't recommend "Moonlight Avenue" HIGH enough because Hill has once again managed to weave together both genres (crime/mystery+romance) of the story with effortless ease, giving it an authentic flavour. If you ask me, one simply can't go wrong with Gerri Hill's writing and storytelling. So, if you're a fan of the crime/mystery genre with a well-crafted plot wrapped in a sizzlingly portrayed age-gap, slow-burn romance, you're in for a treat! You'll see! And with the possibility of it expanding into a series, I'm unapologetically thrilled and excited about it, rubbing my hands in anticipation for more Rylee and Finn and most definitely Dee's turn to have her share of thrills and romance (hopefully!)! And yes, this book was a bloody fantastic read for me, and then some! I'm already on my second read!
Another absolutely fantastic book by Gerri Hill, in much the same vein as Hunter's Way. A great mystery and interesting characters, with love and friendship growing amid the chaos. LOVED IT!!!
