For years I've waited for a book outlining the development and production of Sikorsky aircraft, similar to the well known Putnam series on US and UK aircraft builders. Despite its picture heavy format (as is common with the publisher's "Images of America" series) this book comes very close to fulfilling my wish. It's very complete beginning with Sikorsky's work in pre-revolution Russia and follows him to America where he achieved success with his line of amphibians and flying boats. As expected, the majority of the book covers the firm's well known helicopter line. Each model is illustrated and the author (Mr. Sikorsky's son and former company engineer and executive) manages to provide a lot of easy to understand details in the photo captions.I've read several bios on Sikorsky and the available histories of the firm and still came away learning a great deal. The book covers a great deal of aviation history at a bargain price.
I ordered this book to use for reference for writing a term paper for History of Aviation in America. Book arrived in perfect condition and early. Tons and tons of pictures with good descriptions under each one. The entire story of Igor Sikorsky, including his years in Russia before he came to America, are in the book. A complete listing of all aircraft Igor Sikorsky designed and built, as well as aircraft The Sikorsky Aircraft Company are still building today.Excellent Read.
My son who works for Sikorsky in Connecticut was really pleased with this photo & written history of his company.
My wife loved this gift
Was a gift for a friend and he loved it.
Dozens of photos and tightly focused summary chapters make the work of Igor I. Sikorsky (1889-1972) come alive for the aviation student and layman alike. Sergei Sikorsky, eldest son of the inventor, creates a fitting tribute. The lessons for entrepreneurs and social historians are myriad. Among them - How failure can spur creativity. The crash of the S-5 (the 100th anniversary is coming soon - October 2011) got Sikorsky to begin designing a four-engine airplane. Another gem: Freedom is a necessary ingredient for technological advance and that's the reason the United States has lead the world - the "free work of a free people," as Igor Sikorsky reminds us.We should cringe any time government officials talk about "saving jobs" - such an outlook fosters what Peter Thiel and others call the "stalemate in technology." Yet the growth of Sikorsky Aircraft checks our impulse for market absolutism. As James Pinkerton notes in a superb review of a different book (see August 2011 edition of The American Conservative), government has long played a successful subsidiary role in promoting creativity and economic and technological advance. Government puts the works of Sikorsky and others to use (as does private industry). Government use of Sikorsky helicopters has saved hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide in keeping with the inventor's chief desire for his machines. Have governments used helicopters to kill people? Sadly, yes. But we can hardly blame Igor Sikorsky for that."The Sikorsky Legacy" also whets the appetite for learning more about this engineering genius. The photo of Sikorsky with Charles Lindbergh notes their friendship and partnership in advancing aviation. Lindy's 1927 flight denied Team Sikorsky the Orteig Prize but Sikorsky, religious entrepreneur that he was, wasn't the least bit bitter. He was grateful Lindbergh turned flying from a hobby into a profession. Seeing Lindy turn the landscape, Sikorsky summoned the courage to "bet the farm" in 1928 by building 10 aircraft. He sold them all, cementing his company's future. There are many reasons why Igor Sikorsky was/is a great man and a prolific inventor. The book credits him with pioneering in three areas - airplanes, amphibion aircraft, and helicopters. One could argue that the final project before his 1957 "retirement," the sky crane, actually makes four. In any event, my thesis for Sikorsky's greatness is his religious faith in combination with his daring. Remarkably, the character traits strengthened each other. How many aircraft designers today would be their own test pilots? Answer: Not many. Sikorsky stood behind his work in the best way any one can - he was willing to die for it. That lost art of personal responsibility sprang from Sikorsky's Orthodox Christian faith. Another fruit of the spirit - his vision for beauty. See the interior of picture of the S-42 (page 56) for an inkling of the man's sense of physical beauty, something rapidly vanishing in our age of utilitarianism and Wal-Mart. The broader vision takes into account Sikorsky's drive to invent the helicopter - there's nothing more beautiful than saving human lives.Modesty is another important aspect of his character. Note how Sikorsky wanted his office as close to the engineering department as possible (p. 104) and how he had no interest in corporate machinations. He would hitch to whatever arrangements enabled him to invent and produce effectively. Igor Sikorsky's message for the ages is to let go of our egos and grab on to faith and creativity.
Sergei Sikorsky and the Sikorsky Archives have given us an excellent abbreviated summary of the birth and past/present benefits of helicopters...as developed by his father, Igor. As a navy jet pilot, I found the amount of data just the right length that I wanted to read ...well written...outstanding graphics about each design phase... and outstanding photos of each developmental stage. If you want a quick read about how helicopters arrived on the scene, and if you want an inspirational story about how individual hard work can lead to success, this is the right book for you.
This book was written by Igor Sikorsky's son (who was also the V.P. of Engineering for a while). It is more of a photo album then a book but it is great. There is a brief write up of each era in his father's work describing the main challenges. There is also a good photo of each aircraft that was built (including experimental aircraft). The caption for each photo explains why the craft was built and its historical significance. I am currently an engineer at Sikorsky and my copy of this book has been circulating around engineering. Everybody enjoys it.
